Imphal, 03 May 2016 : Temple complex of Panthou alias Hijam Ratan was today torched by angry locals of Wangkhei Hijam Leirak under the Porompat Police Station, Imphal East. A large number of mob went on rampage damaging property and torching more than 20 vehicles parked inside the temple complex. The incident occurred at around 7.30 this morning when the guardians came to take their wards back home. The guardians told media persons that there was no restriction from the side of the residents of Wangkhei Hijam Leirak to take their wards back home. But tension erupted after a young girl told media persons that there was restriction from the side of the locals which turned out to be the cause of the entire incident today. Ahead of the incident some guardians were successful in taking their wards from the temple complex. Soon after large mob turned up and vandalise properties inside the Panthou's temple complex. The angry mob torched 13 four-wheelers and 7-8 two-wheelers parked inside the temple complex. The mob also torched the hall and other buildings located inside the complex. Following the incident, a large number of Manipur Police personnel arrived at the spot to control the volatile situation. The police personnel could not control the situation as large number of people from other localities rushed to Wangkhei Hijam Leirak. In the meantime fire tenders arrived and tried to doze off the fire. It almost took 2 hours for fire tenders to completely doze off the fire. After some time another police team comprising top police officials of Imphal East rushed to the spot. Soon clash erupted between the large number of police personnel and mob. Police personnel fired smoke bomb, tear gas shells as mob pelted stones at the police personnel. Many locals including police personnel sustained injury during the incident. District Magistrate Imphal East has imposed curfew in Wangkhei Hijam Leirak and Wangkhei Mayum Leirak.
