Manipur Announces Jobs for National Games Medalists

Imphal, August 22: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has announced a new Special Recruitment Policy to provide government jobs to National Games medalists from Manipur. The announcement was made during a felicitation programme for 71 sportspersons, including eight who participated in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026, at Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium. Under the policy, vacant sportsperson-reserved posts in relevant departments will be offered to medal winners aged 18 to 23 based on their sporting achievements. Four National Games gold medallists received appointment letters in the Home Department, while 67 athletes were appointed as Physical Education Teachers under the Youth Affairs and Sports Department.

Mirabai Chanu Eyes Asian Games Medal

Imphal, August 22: Padma Shri and Khel Ratna awardee Saikhom Mirabai Chanu arrived in Imphal today to attend the State Government’s felicitation programme for medal winners and participants of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. The Nongpok Kakching-born weightlifter has won three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals in 2018, 2022 and 2026. Speaking to the media, Mirabai said she is yet to win a medal at the Asian Games and expressed determination to achieve the feat at the 20th Asian Games in Japan. The continental sporting event is scheduled from September 19 to October 4, 2026.

Imphal-Guwahati Bus Service Brings Relief to Passengers

Kakching, August 22: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has said the resumption of the Imphal–Guwahati bus service will ease the hardship caused by high airfares. Speaking at the inauguration of “Strengthening of Schools under Samagra Shiksha Manipur” at Wabagai Higher Secondary School, the Chief Minister said prolonged unrest had restricted movement and forced people to rely heavily on air travel. He alleged that some airlines charged excessively high fares. Facilities worth around Rs 90 lakh, including Physics, Chemistry and Biology laboratories and separate toilets, were inaugurated at the school. Khemchand also announced road projects worth around Rs 10 crore in Wabagai Constituency.

Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati Bus Service Continues

Imphal, August 22: Public transport services along the Imphal–Dimapur–Guwahati route via NH-2 continued smoothly for the second consecutive day today. Four buses and six Winger vehicles carrying more than 200 passengers departed from ISBT Khuman Lampak at around 10 am. Meanwhile, the 125 passengers who travelled on the inaugural journey yesterday reached Guwahati safely earlier today. The service resumed following the August 8 announcement by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand, Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen and Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen regarding reopening of the highways and restoration of the interstate bus service. The Inter State Transporter Association welcomed the development.

Drivers’ Association Flags Poor Condition of NH-37

Imphal, August 22: The Manipur Drivers’ Association has raised concern over the deteriorating condition of the state’s lifeline, particularly the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway. Speaking to the media at its Kwakeithel office, MDA General Secretary Sanjay Kshetrimayum said poor road conditions are causing severe hardship to goods transporters, with trucks reportedly taking nearly a month to reach Imphal. He urged authorities to ensure timely repairs and proper execution of highway works by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited. The association also appealed to truck owners and drivers to avoid overloading vehicles, saying this could reduce travel time and prevent further damage to the highway.

Manipur Gets First Mechanised Rotary Parking Facility

Imphal, August 22: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand today inaugurated Manipur’s first Mechanised Rotary Parking Facility at Nagamapal Chungkham Leirak under the Imphal Smart City Mission. The facility, constructed by Imphal Smart City Limited, will operate through a cashless system and is expected to ease traffic congestion and provide convenient parking for visitors to Khwairamband Bazar. Speaking at the inauguration, the Chief Minister said peace is essential for development and that issues can only be resolved through dialogue. He appealed to local residents and the Bazar Committee to help maintain the facility and keep the surrounding area clean.

JFD Protest Continues in Porompat

Imphal, August 22: Nongpal, a joint body of 13 clubs from Porompat DC Road in Imphal East, staged a sit-in and rally at Top Khongmakhong today as part of the ongoing JFD movement. Protesters raised slogans including “No NRC, No Census” and “NRC Updation Before Census” before marching towards the Porompat DC Office. JFD Convenor Jeetendra Ningombam criticised BJP MLAs, accusing them of playing with public sentiment, and urged people to remain firm in their demand for deferring the Census in Manipur. He maintained that seeking NRC updation before the Census is not against the interests of any community.

Meitei-Naga Women Jointly Protest at Pallel

Kakching, August 22: Meitei and Naga women staged a joint protest at Pallel Bazar today, demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens before the Census in Manipur. The protest was organised with the participation of 11 Naga organisations, Pallel Meira Paibi groups and Meitei civil society organisations. Shops were closed and roads blocked during the demonstration. Maring Women Union President Julee Aling urged the government to respect the sentiments of indigenous communities. Pallel Apunba Meira Paibi Lup Finance Secretary Romita Leimapokpam criticised the reported threat of suspension against government employees who do not attend Census training, calling for the government to address the NRC demand.

Kwakeithel Residents Back JFD Movement

Imphal, August 22: Residents of Lane No. 7, Kwakeithel Lamdong in Imphal West staged a protest today in support of the JFD’s demand for NRC updation before the Census. Protesters also opposed alleged attempts by police to arrest JFD leaders and urged authorities to stop such actions. Kwakeithel Lamdong Leikai Meira Paibi President Soibam Chitarani said the movement was aimed at protecting the future of the indigenous population. She termed any attempt to arrest leaders of the agitation unacceptable. The protest adds to a series of demonstrations across Manipur over the demand for NRC updation before the Census.

Torch Rally Announced in Jiribam

Jiribam, August 22: The Jiri United Committee has appealed to indigenous communities in Jiribam to participate in a torch rally scheduled for 6 pm tomorrow, demanding NRC updation before the Census. Speaking at a press conference in Jiribam today, Committee Convenor H. Priyananda said the Meira Rally would form part of the ongoing movement for NRC updation. The committee has called on residents to join the rally and express solidarity with the wider campaign against conducting the Census before addressing the NRC issue. Similar protests and awareness programmes have been organised in different parts of Manipur in recent weeks.

NPP Manipur Supports NRC Before Census

Imphal, August 22: The National People’s Party Manipur unit has extended support to the demand for conducting the Census only after updating the National Register of Citizens. Speaking at the party office in Mantripukhri, NPP State President Dr. Lorho S. Pfoze said the party has submitted a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the NPP National President, seeking NRC updation before the Census and delimitation exercises. Copies were also sent to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other concerned authorities. NPP National Vice President Irengbam Hemochandra said conducting the Census while many people displaced by the 2023 conflict remain in relief camps would not be appropriate.

BJP Delegation Meets Giriraj Singh Over NRC

New Delhi, August 22: The BJP Manipur Pradesh NRC and Census Committee met Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh in New Delhi yesterday and pressed for NRC updation in Manipur before the Census. The meeting was part of the committee’s continuing efforts to urge the Centre to address the demand. Committee Convenor K. Saratkumar said the committee had earlier submitted a representation to BJP National President Nitin Nabin on February 17, followed by meetings in March and August. He said Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam also travelled to Delhi on August 19 to raise the issue with Central leaders. The committee plans further meetings with Union ministers.

FOCS Calls for Inclusive Dialogue in Manipur

Imphal, August 22: Federation of Civil Society Organisation Manipur spokesperson Puyam Rakesh has warned that demands for separate land by some communities could further complicate the situation in Manipur. Speaking at a public convention titled “Reshaping the Political Upheaval in Manipur: Issues & Challenges,” jointly organised by FOCS and the Manipur University Students’ Union at Manipur University, Rakesh called for unity among all communities and stressed the need for inclusive dialogue to restore peace and normalcy. He said civil society organisations representing all communities have a responsibility to help find a solution to the ongoing crisis. The convention also resolved to strengthen resolutions adopted during the July 28 Academic Discourse.

Manipur Pineapple Exported to Rajasthan

Imphal, August 22: A trial consignment of 500 kilograms of organic Kew variety pineapple from Manipur was flagged off for a Rajasthan-based firm today under the supervision of the Directorate of Horticulture and Soil Conservation. The consignment was sent to M/S Nand Kishore Chaudhary HUF in Jaipur. Mangal Organic Producer Company Limited Chairman Laikhuram Sarmal said around 500 farmers are registered with the company, with pineapple being its main crop. He said the shipment was facilitated under the Market Intervention for Horticulture Products Scheme of MOMA. The company is also registered under the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region Phase-4 in Imphal East district.

Blood Donation Camp Held at RIMS

Imphal, August 22: Manipur Catholic Youth Organisation, Helping Help Peoples’ Manipur and RIMS Blood Bank jointly organised a blood donation camp at RIMS today. Speaking at the programme, MYCO Director Fr. Jacob Darsongam highlighted the importance of voluntary blood donation, particularly during emergencies involving accidents, childbirth and other medical conditions. He appealed to people to donate blood regularly to help patients facing shortages. Organisers also expressed appreciation to doctors and staff of the RIMS Blood Bank for their support in conducting the camp. The initiative aimed to strengthen the availability of blood for patients requiring urgent medical treatment.

Shumang Leela Workshop Concludes

Imphal, August 22: The monthlong 32nd Shumang Leela Workshop organised by the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council concluded today at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen in Palace Compound. The workshop began on July 20 and featured sessions conducted by renowned Shumang Leela and theatre experts on various aspects of the traditional performance art. Workshop Project Director Sougrakpam Hemanta said preserving key elements of Shumang Leela from its formative years remains a challenge. He highlighted the importance of such workshops in nurturing new artistes and strengthening the traditional theatre form. The programme provided participants with opportunities to learn from experienced practitioners.

Women Poets Take Part in Poetry Competition

Imphal, August 22: The 28th Poetry Recitation Competition of Mahila Kavya Manch, Manipur was held today at Dosuyali Hall in Kwakeithel Moirang Purel Leikai. Around 50 women poets from different parts of the state participated in the competition. Progressive Writers Association Manipur Vice President Nirmala Rajkumari attended the event. Speaking on the occasion, Mahila Kavya Manch President Dr. Ksh. Subhadani said the organisation provides a platform for women poets and has a presence not only across India but also internationally. She stressed that the competition aims to highlight women’s lives and identities beyond their domestic responsibilities.

BJP Holds Booth-Level Meeting in Noney

Imphal, August 22: The BJP organised a booth-level meeting at Rengpang under Nungba Assembly Constituency in Noney district today to strengthen the party organisation. The meeting was held at Rengpang Primary School and led by Nungba MLA and Hill Areas Committee Chairman Dinganglung Gangmei. BJP Nungba Mandal President Makuphun Rongmei, ST Morcha Vice President D. Stody, ADC Member Poulouanthui Rongmei, party leaders, workers and newly joined members attended the programme. Discussions focused on strengthening the party organisation at the grassroots level and increasing participation among local workers and supporters.

Khongyam Club Seeks Repair of Damaged Culvert

Imphal, August 22: Khongyam Bright Star Club of Khongyam Makha Leikai has drawn the attention of authorities to a damaged culvert along the Sugnu-Ithai Inter-Village Road in Sugnu Constituency, Kakching district. According to the club, the culvert over the Khongyam Makha Leikai Sanasam canal is damaged, while the adjoining road is also in poor condition. Around seven feet of the culvert has reportedly been damaged, making vehicular movement difficult. The club said students and the general public are facing considerable inconvenience because of the condition of the road and culvert. It urged the authorities to inspect the site and undertake repairs at the earliest.

Heavy Rain Likely Across Manipur

Imphal, August 22: The India Meteorological Department’s Imphal centre has forecast rainfall at many places across Manipur today and tomorrow, with a yellow warning issued for heavy rain at some locations. According to the forecast, rainfall is likely at most places across the state during the period. The ICAR Agrometeorological Unit at Lamphelpat recorded 0.8 millimetres of rainfall in the past 24 hours. Manipur recorded a maximum temperature of 30 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 23.5 degrees Celsius today. Residents have been advised to remain alert, particularly in areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall and related weather conditions.

Lanchenba Wins Gold at Junior National Aquatics

Bhubaneswar, August 22: Manipur swimmer Laitonjam Lanchenba won gold in the Men’s 200-metre Butterfly at the 52nd Junior National Aquatic Championship being held at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar. Lanchenba clocked 2 minutes 03.73 seconds in the final to secure the top position. Yagna Mongam of Andhra Pradesh won silver in 2 minutes 08.22 seconds, while Dhrupad Ramakrishna of Karnataka claimed bronze in 2 minutes 08.90 seconds. The championship is being organised under the Swimming Federation of India from August 18 to 23. Lanchenba had earlier won silver in the 50-metre Butterfly on the opening day. He is a Class 11 Arts student from Nongpok Maheikol.

Manipur Powerlifting Championship Underway

Imphal, August 22: The two-day Manipur Powerlifting Championship organised by the Powerlifting Association Manipur is underway at the DM College of Teacher Education Multipurpose Hall. Around 100 powerlifters are competing in different categories under the Indian Powerlifting Federation. Association Secretary Lourangbam Ginot said powerlifting has gained popularity in Manipur and across the country, with Manipuri athletes making their mark at national and international competitions. He also informed that 35 selected state powerlifters are undergoing training to represent Manipur at the Senior National Powerlifting Championships, including equipped and unequipped events, as well as the National Bench Press and Deadlift Championships in New Delhi from September 7 to 11.

Thangmeiband Team B Wins Kang Tournament Match

Imphal, August 22: Thangmeiband Team B Kangkhut secured an emphatic 18-8 victory over SSU Singjamei Kangkhut in the fifth league match of the first Sinam Nodiachand Memorial Invitation League-cum-Knockout Kang Tournament held today. A total of 12 teams divided into four groups are participating in the tournament organised by Laijing Ningthou Apunba Kangkhut Thangmeiband. The tournament is being conducted through league and knockout stages. The next league encounter is scheduled for August 27, when Heingang Kangkhut will face SSU Singjamei Kangkhut. The tournament aims to promote Kang and provide competitive opportunities for teams from across Manipur.

Singjamei Kangkhut Defeats Gopaldev Kangkhut

Imphal, August 22: Singjamei Kangkhut defeated Gopaldev Kangkhut Yaiskul 4-2 in the fourth league match of the second Shree Shree Gopaldev Trophy Leimarol Kang League Tournament. The match was played at Shree Shree Gopaldev Mandop Kangshang in Yaiskul. The tournament is being jointly organised by Gopaldev Kangkhut and Yaiskul Kangkhut. Singjamei Kangkhut secured the win after a competitive encounter, strengthening its position in the league competition. In the next match, AKU Kangkhut Thangmeiband will take on Singjamei Kangkhut on August 25. The tournament is providing a platform for Kang players and teams to compete and promote the traditional sport.
