Manipur State Eye Bank would commence operations at the end of October. Health Minister Dr. Sapam Ranjan disclosed the same while addressing the gathering at the 24th World Sight Day 2023 observance on the theme "Love Your Eyes At Work," today. National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment, State Health Society, National Health Mission Manipur organised the event at Classic Grande in Chingmeirong, Imphal.
Dr. Ranjan expressed concern about the habit of people in the state buying glasses from roadside vendors without a doctor's prescription as it could bring potential harm to eyes. He stressed the need for the government to regulate such practice closely. The Health Minister also encouraged people to pledge to donate their eyes and called for collective efforts to understand and raise awareness about glaucoma, an eye condition that can lead to blindness if not detected in time.
During the event, relevant officials from the Health Department distributed spectacles to elderly individuals, and appreciation certificates were presented to eye-related NGOs.
