Ibobi Blames BJP Governments for Prolonged Manipur Crisis
Imphal, October 1: Former Chief Minister and MPCC President Okram Ibobi has blamed the BJP governments at the Centre and in Manipur for the prolonged crisis in the state, alleging delayed action, mishandling of the situation and failure to maintain law and order since May 3, 2023. Speaking at a Women’s Empowerment in Politics meeting organised by the Heingang Block Mahila Congress Committee at Heingang Mayai Leikai, Ibobi said communities had lived together peacefully for generations but thousands of people continue to stay in relief camps. All India Mahila Congress President Alka Lamba also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his absence from Manipur.
Radheshyam Urges Government Employees to Serve in Remote Areas
Imphal, October 1: Heirok MLA and government spokesperson Th. Radheshyam has urged government employees, particularly teachers, to serve with commitment in remote and hill areas of Manipur. Speaking at the launch of the Manipur Integrated Test Management System and Secondary-Level Holistic Progress Card at Classic Grande, Chingmeirong, he said schools in Imphal generally have adequate teachers while remote areas face shortages. Radheshyam stressed the importance of equal attention to students across the state and called for greater involvement of parents and teachers. He also highlighted the need for reforms in college education and proper implementation of NEP 2020, including personality development and life skills.
Manipur Observes International Day of Older Persons
Imphal, October 1: Manipur observed the International Day of Older Persons 2026 with a state-level programme at City Convention Centre, Imphal. Organised by the Social Welfare Department, the event was held under the theme “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives.” Commissioner Haobam Rosita said the department would intensify efforts to formulate a dedicated policy for senior citizens in consultation with stakeholders. She stressed the importance of respecting and caring for elderly people while recognising their contributions to society. Rosita also urged people to remain connected with and support senior citizens beyond the annual observance.
CM Yumnam Khemchand Extends Greetings to Senior Citizens
Imphal, October 1: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand extended greetings to the people on the occasion of International Day of Older Persons 2026. In a social media message, the Chief Minister said the observance recognises the important contributions of senior citizens while highlighting the social, health and economic challenges associated with ageing populations. He said older persons contribute to families and communities through mentorship, cultural preservation and shared wisdom. The Chief Minister urged people to recognise their value and ensure that senior citizens continue to receive respect and support. Speaker Seeks Special Package for Senior Citizens
Imphal, October 1: Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata has appealed to the state government to introduce a special package to address the difficulties faced by senior citizens. He was speaking at an International Day of Older Persons programme organised by Senior Citizen Forum, Imphal East, at Dharmalaya Hall, Brahmapur Nahabam. Satyabrata said the growing number of elderly people living alone has emerged as a serious social concern. He urged society to treat senior citizens with care, respect and dignity and stressed that everyone will eventually grow old. Several legislators, senior citizens and members of the forum attended the programme, where gifts were distributed to elderly participants.
International Day of Older Persons Observed in Thoubal
Thoubal, October 1: International Day of Older Persons was observed at the Integrated Rural Development and Educational Organisation campus at Wangbal in Thoubal district. The event was organised by the IRDEO Regional Resource and Training Centre under the aegis of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Khangabok MLA Okram Surjakumar, Senior Citizens Welfare Forum Manipur President Dr Maibam Rajendra, former Minister Dr M. Nara and other officials attended the programme. Speakers highlighted the importance of addressing age-related challenges and promoting healthy and fulfilling lives for senior citizens. Medical professionals also spoke on preventive measures and health concerns associated with ageing.
MEELAL Supports Call to Boycott Sangai Festival 2026
Imphal, October 1: The Meitei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup, or MEELAL, has extended support to COCOMI’s call to boycott Sangai Festival 2026. In a press note, MEELAL said the decision was taken amid continuing attacks on villages and the displacement of thousands of people who remain unable to return home. The organisation alleged that the government has failed to bring the situation under control. MEELAL said its position was based on concerns over the security situation and the continued displacement of indigenous people. The organisation’s statement comes as discussions continue over the proposed conduct of the annual tourism festival.
Arms and Ammunition Recovered in Khordak Search Operation
Bishnupur, October 1: A combined team of Bishnupur District Police and security forces recovered a cache of arms and ammunition during a cordon and search operation at Khordak. According to police, the recovery was made from Khordak Patton near the Forest Beat Office under Keibul Lamjao Police Station. The seized items included six improvised explosive devices, one drone bomb, four 36 hand grenades, two Lathods, one country-made MP-5 and five magazines of different firearms. Police also recovered a large quantity of ammunition during the operation. Further details regarding the recovery and investigation were not stated in the bulletin.
Arms and Explosives Recovered in Chandel
Chandel, October 1: A combined team of Chandel Police and Assam Rifles recovered arms and ammunition during a search operation in an area under Molcham Police Station. According to police, the recovered items included one Pompi, one Chinese grenade, one locally made grenade and four dummy mortars. Security personnel also recovered four detonators, two delay fuses and three single-barrel muzzle-loading guns, along with other materials. The operation was conducted as part of security measures in the area. Police and security forces have continued search operations in different parts of the state to detect and recover suspected arms, ammunition and explosives.
Man Arrested in Churachandpur Over Alleged Extortion Activities
Churachandpur, October 1: Police have arrested a 44-year-old man allegedly involved in extortion activities from Khomoi Village under Churachandpur District Police. According to police, the arrested person has been identified as Letginthang Haokip of ST. Chullouphai Village in Churachandpur district. Police said Rs. 10 lakh in cash and a mobile handset were recovered from his possession. The arrest was made as part of an investigation into alleged extortion activities in the area. Further legal proceedings are expected to follow as police continue their investigation into the case and examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence.
National Voluntary Blood Donation Day Observed in Imphal
Imphal, October 1: National Voluntary Blood Donation Day was observed at Sangai Hall of Hotel Imphal, North AOC, jointly organised by the Manipur State AIDS Control Society and State Blood Transfusion Council. State Blood Transfusion Council Director Dr L. Dayalakshmi said voluntarily donated blood is considered a safe source for medical use and explained that every donated blood sample undergoes tests for HIV, Hepatitis-B, Hepatitis-C, malaria and syphilis. She said the observance aims to encourage voluntary blood donation and increase regular community donors. Dr Dayalakshmi noted that blood donation in Manipur remains below average, while recent activities in August showed an increase in voluntary donations.
Complex Whipple Surgery Successfully Performed on 10-Year-Old Girl
Imphal, October 1: Doctors at Karkinos Healthcare, Imphal, have successfully performed a complex Whipple surgery on a 10-year-old girl diagnosed with a large pancreatic tumour. The girl had been admitted with severe stomach pain and nausea before examinations detected the tumour. Surgeons removed the tumour during a five-hour procedure, after which the child recovered and was discharged. Head of Surgical Oncology and Medical Superintendent Dr Sapam Opendro said Whipple surgery is an advanced procedure requiring specialised expertise and facilities. Karkinos Unit Head Dr Santanu Panda said the surgery was performed free of cost under PMJAY. He added that the hospital aims to provide specialised cancer care in the Northeast.
Governor Extends Gandhi Jayanti Greetings
Imphal, October 1: Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla extended greetings to the people on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, which will be observed on October 2. In his message, the Governor said the occasion reminds the nation of Mahatma Gandhi’s courage and his contribution to the country. He called upon people to follow Gandhi’s teachings and work towards peace and progress in society. Gandhi Jayanti is observed annually on October 2 to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Imphal, October 1: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand extended greetings to the people of Manipur ahead of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2. In his message, the Chief Minister said Mahatma Gandhi’s life, dedicated to truth and non-violence, continues to inspire generations. He said Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence, peace and mutual understanding remains relevant as Manipur passes through challenging circumstances. Manipur Wins Overall Team Championship in Thang-Ta
Srinagar, October 1: Manipur emerged overall team champion at the 32nd Junior Boys’ and Girls’ Thang-Ta Championship held at the Srinagar Multipurpose Sports Complex from September 28 to 30. Hosted by the Jammu and Kashmir Thang-Ta Association under the Thang-Ta Federation of India, the championship saw Manipur secure 20 gold, five silver and two bronze medals for a total of 27 medals. Jammu and Kashmir finished runners-up. A total of 436 players, including 237 boys and 199 girls from different states, competed in various Thang-Ta events. Trophies were presented to the winners and runners-up during the closing ceremony.
Mirabai Chanu Receives Warm Welcome in Imphal
Imphal, October 1: Padma Shri and Khel Ratna awardee Saikhom Mirabai Chanu received a warm welcome at Imphal International Airport after winning a silver medal in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event at the 20th Asian Games. Lamlai MLA Kh. Ibomcha, YAS Director Dr M. Veto, coaches, family members and supporters attended the reception. Mirabai said she was inspired to take up weightlifting after watching Nameirakpam Kunjarani compete at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Recalling her early struggles, she said her journey was driven by the dream of bringing recognition to Manipur. She also encouraged young sportspersons to aim for the international stage.
Manipur Police Bodybuilders Win Medals at National Championship
Karnal, October 1: Manipur Police Sports Club bodybuilders P. Nandajit and W. Kiran won gold and bronze medals respectively at the 75th All India Police Wrestling Cluster 2026 held at Madhuban, Haryana, from September 23 to 27. Nandajit, a constable posted at Tamenglong Police Station, is a member of the bodybuilding team based at 1st Manipur Rifles. Bronze medallist W. Kiran is a head constable at Imphal West District Police Station and also belongs to the same team. Three bodybuilders from the Manipur Police Sports Club participated in the championship. The results added two medals to Manipur’s tally at the national-level event.
