Gaikhangam unaware of state govt’s stand on deletion of IPC Section 309
A day after the Centre decided to delete Section 309 of IPC that is attempt to suicide, Impact News reached out to Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam to know about the stand of govt of Manipur on it. But, Gaikhangam had no knowledge whether the state Government has supported the move or not. 18 states and 4 Union territories backed the recommendation of the Law Commission of India to remove the Section 309 of IPC. If it is removed then Manipur faces legal dilemma in handling the case of Irom Chanu Sharmila. When Impact News raised the question on what section will be imposed on Sharmila, Deputy Chief Minister was left speechless. It may be mentioned that Irom Chanu Sharmila who is on fast for the last 14 years has been charged under the same Section.
5-day long Kakching Festival kicked off
The second 5-day long Kakching Festival mounted by Joint Non-Government Voluntary Organization (JNGVO) Kackhing kicked off yesterday. Members of JNGVO and sports persons took out a torch rally from Krejing to various parts of Kakching spreading the message of the festival. They also made offerings to several religious places for smooth conduct of the festival. Speaking at the function Parliamentary Secretary M Prithiviraj said the state can attract tourists only when the traditional songs and dances are preserved. On the first day of the festival, Kakching football match, Kakching haraoba and Kakchig Musical Nite were held.
Former MP Rishang Keishing felicitated
Rishang Keishing who once served the people of Manipur as Chief Minister felicitated at a function organised by All Manipur Senior Citizens’ Welfare Association at Mongsangai Old Age Home. Keishing was felicitated in recognition for his support and moral encouragement for construction and improvement of the Old Age Home. It may be mentioned that the Old Age Home supports marginalised and downtrodden elderly persons in the state. Speaking at the function, Rishang Keishing said he wants state government to provide basic facilities to the Old Age Home.
Three cadres of United Revolutionary Front apprehended
Imphal West District Police commando unit arrested 3 cadres of United Revolutionary Front (URF), a breakaway group of KCP from Sairemkhul Mayai Leikai during a counter insurgency operation on the 4th of this month. Those arrested are Salam Keshorjit Meitei @ Manja, 35 yrs S/o S. Samungou Meitei of Khurai Salanthong, Khundrakpam Biren Meitei @ Manao, 22 yrs S/o (L) Kh Ingocha Meitei of Sairemkhul Mayai Leikai and Wangkhem Shyamkanhai @ Wareppa, 35 yrs S/o (L) W Heramot Singh of Naranshena Maning Leikai. In a press release, PRO police dept said investigations revealed that they were assigned to serve monetary demands to various businessmen in Imphal area especially gas agencies located in Imphal West district. One Access scooter bearing registration No. MN01M/9481, registered in Salam Shamungou Meitei's name and incriminating articles were seized from their possession.
BJP Manipur accuses govt of misappropriating funds for repair of Khuman Lampak Sports Complex
BJP demanded the state government to produce a white paper on the fund meant for the renovation of Khuman Lampak Sports Complex within five days. Speaking at a press meet at its office at Nityaipat Chuthek, BJP Manipur Pradesh President,Th Chaoba, expressed the apprehension that the state govt has misappropriated Rs 100 crore released under 13th Finance Commission for renovation of Khuman Lampak Sports Complex. He said renovation work for the Complex was entrusted with Manipur Development Society instead of giving it to the experts. He asked the govt to publish a white paper and demanded a CBI enquiry into the work. Th Chaoba also demanded that Manipur government should make an attempt to start classes for the session 2014-15 at the SAI Centres before the construction of the Sports University begins. Opining that the pace at which the govt is working on ILP system in Manipur is rather slow Chaoba said govt should try to present a bill in the winter session of the state assembly.
