Final Electoral Roll Published After SIR 2026

Imphal, September 6: The final Electoral Roll of Manipur following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2026 was published today, with the total number of voters standing at 19,60,620. The draft roll published on July 5 had 19,34,399 voters. During verification, 26,362 voters were found to have issues, while claims and objections from 96,985 persons led to 30,650 deletions and 56,871 additions. The final roll includes 9,53,350 male voters, 10,06,962 female voters, 308 third-gender voters and 20,819 service voters. CEO Arun Kumar Sinha said aggrieved persons can file an appeal before the District Election Officer and subsequently before the CEO.

JFD Demands Full Census Deferment Until NRC Updation

Thoubal, September 6: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has demanded that the Ministry of Home Affairs defer the entire Census exercise in Manipur until the NRC is updated, rather than postponing only the House Listing phase. JFD Finance Secretary Sunil Karam made the demand at a protest meeting organised by Khekman Apunba Lup at Khekman Makha Leikai Community Hall. He urged legislators to pass a resolution during the ongoing Assembly session demanding NRC updation with 1951 as the base year. JFD said the movement would continue until its demands are addressed and warned that legislators and ministers opposing the demands could face public resistance.

Ima Market Women Vendors Protest for NRC Updation

Imphal, September 6: Women vendors of Khwairamband Ima Market staged a protest demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens in Manipur with 1951 as the base year. The protest was organised under the banner of Khwairamband Apunba Imashing. Speaking to the media, protestor Asem Nirmala said NRC updation with 1951 as the base year is crucial for the State. She also alleged that political parties are using the NRC issue for political gain, describing the practice as deplorable. The protesters asserted that they would continue their movement until the demand for NRC updation with 1951 as the base year is fulfilled.

KAPECON Holds Sit-in Seeking Deportation of Illegal Immigrants

Imphal, September 6: A sit-in protest demanding the deportation of illegal immigrants from Manipur before the Census exercise was held at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai Community Hall. The protest was organised by the Kanglei People’s Confederation (KAPECON). Speaking on the sidelines, KAPECON General Secretary Keithellakpam London said detecting and deporting illegal immigrants is the responsibility of the Central Government. He alleged that the Centre has failed to take adequate action on the issue. Two Protesters Injured in Scuffle at Ima Market

Imphal, September 6: At least two demonstrators were injured during a scuffle between protesters and security forces at Khwairamband Ima Market. The protesters had marched towards the Chief Minister’s Bungalow demanding justice for six Naga civilians allegedly killed after abduction by Kuki militants. The rally involved members of Meitei, Naga and Meitei-Pangal communities. Security forces stopped the march, leading to a confrontation. Protesters later attempted to move towards the State Assembly but were stopped at Khoyathong. Security forces fired several tear-gas shells to disperse the demonstrators, injuring two protesters. Okram Joy Blames Political Infighting for Manipur Crisis

Imphal, September 6: Veteran politician Okram Joy has alleged that the actions of MLAs and infighting within the BJP-led government have contributed to Manipur’s destruction and continuing crisis. He was speaking at the formation programme of the Langthabal Block Youth Congress Committee at his Kakwa residence. Joy alleged that one section of BJP MLAs was working to disintegrate Manipur while another opposed it, resulting in continued public suffering. He also identified vote-buying, vote-selling and vote-brokering during elections as root causes of the crisis. Joy said his decision on contesting the next election would depend on the youth, women, children and party workers of Langthabal.

Joy Backs NRC Before Census, Recalls 1951 Base-Year Bills

Imphal, September 6: Veteran politician Okram Joy has backed the demand that the Census should not be conducted without NRC updation, saying the Manipur Assembly had twice adopted 1951 as the base year. He recalled that the provision was incorporated through the Protection of Manipur People Bill in 2015 and the Manipur People Bill in 2018, though neither received presidential assent. On delimitation, Joy recalled an all-party delegation’s 2005 appeal for deferment amid concerns over abnormal population growth. He alleged that the Centre’s 2020 decision to proceed with delimitation contributed to the present crisis. Joy also criticised the BJP Manipur unit for claiming credit for the Census deferment.

COCOMI Farmers’ Wing Seeks Compensation for Affected Farmers

Imphal, September 6: COCOMI Farmers’ Wing Co-Convenor Konthoujam Thoiba has urged the government to raise and resolve the issue of compensation for farmers who have been unable to cultivate their farmlands because of the prevailing crisis. Speaking to the media at the COCOMI office in Lamphel, Thoiba said the government has yet to take steps to address the hardships faced by affected farmers. He said paddy cultivation is essential not only for family livelihood but also for meeting expenses such as children’s education. According to him, many farmers have been unable to cultivate their fields for more than three years. He urged legislators to take up the matter during the Assembly session.

Tongou Villagers Renew Demand for Bridge at Old Ukhrul Road

Ukhrul, September 6: Residents of Tongou and surrounding villages have renewed their demand for construction of a bridge at Tongou Junction along Old Ukhrul Road. They recalled an announcement made in 2010 for construction of an RCC bridge. Tongou Village Chief Atem Shimrey said the ongoing Naga-Kuki conflict has restricted movement between communities, making the Mahadev-Toloi route unusable. As a result, Old Ukhrul Road remains the main connectivity option for villagers. During the rainy season, the Thoubal River becomes difficult to cross, forcing residents to take a detour of more than 30 kilometres for an eight-kilometre stretch. Villagers said the situation creates serious difficulties, particularly during medical emergencies.

Three Sentenced to 15 Years in 2020 Methamphetamine Case

Thoubal, September 6: The Special NDPS Court in Guwahati has sentenced three persons, including two from Manipur, to 15 years’ imprisonment in connection with a 2020 drug seizure case investigated by the Narcotics Control Bureau. The convicts have been identified as Shakil Khan of Lilong in Thoubal district, Yahiya Khan of Irilbung in Imphal East district and Mithilesh Kumar of Buranath, Bhagalpur, Bihar. According to Impact News sources, the three were arrested by the NCB in Guwahati in 2020 with more than two kilograms of methamphetamine tablets. Following their arrest, a case was registered and the trial continued before the court delivered the sentence.

Stolen Honda Activa Recovered in Lilong

Thoubal, September 6: A joint team of City Police and Lilong Police recovered a Honda Activa reportedly stolen from the Thangal Bazar Temporary Market in Imphal. The vehicle, bearing registration number MN01-AN-7782, was recovered from the Lilong Haoreibi Turel Ahanbi area. The recovery followed efforts by police to trace the stolen two-wheeler. The vehicle has reportedly been taken into police custody for further investigation. Authorities are expected to verify the circumstances surrounding the theft and recovery of the Activa. Sanamahi Temple Board to Hold Martyrs’ Tribute Ritual

Imphal, September 6: The Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board will organise the Langbal Chara Tamba ritual on September 12 at Haying Khongbal Uphong, Imphal, to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the ongoing conflict. Discourse on Sacred Grove Conservation Held in Bishnupur

Bishnupur, September 6: A one-day discourse on the conservation of Umang Lai, or sacred groves, was held at Ibudhou Loyalakpa Shrine in Yumnam Khunou under the aegis of Umanglai Kanba Lup (UKAL), Bishnupur branch. Heads and functionaries of 135 Umang Lai shrines from Utlou and Ningthoukhong attended the programme.
