AMWJU Foundation Day: CM Announces Proposed Hike in Journalists’ Pension

Imphal, September 16: The All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) observed its 52nd Foundation Day at the Manipur Press Club in Majorkhul, Imphal. Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand announced that the journalists’ pension amount is proposed to be increased from Rs. 8 thouand to Rs. 10 thouand, while the family pension would rise from Rs. 5 thousand to Rs. 7 thousand. He said journalists who could not make pension contributions during the conflict would be given a one-time relaxation to reactivate their pension accounts. The Chief Minister said the proposals would be placed before the Cabinet for consideration. He also said around Rs. 1 crore in pending advertisement bills had been disbursed, with a follow-up meeting scheduled for September 25.

Wangkhei MLA Says Government Supports Demand for NRC Updation

Imphal, September 16: Wangkhei MLA Thangjam Arunkumar has said the state government supports the demand raised by the Joint Forum for Democracy (JFD) and civil society organisations for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur. Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of a Vocational Education Classroom-cum-Workshop at Lamlong Higher Secondary School, Arunkumar described the demand as a correct step towards identifying illegal immigrants. He said the previous government led by former Chief Minister N. Biren had passed an Assembly resolution on the NRC, while the present government has also adopted a resolution seeking its updation. Arunkumar added that a team of MLAs led by Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam is camping in Delhi to submit the people’s demand to the Government of India.

Noney, September 16: The All Manipur Petroleum Product Drivers Association has expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand, EOI and RO dealers, IOCL officials and the JTC Women Wing, Noney, for providing financial assistance to drivers affected by the recent attack on petroleum tankers along the Imphal-Jiribam route. Wangkhei MLA Calls for Better Government Schools

Wabagai Students Begin Indefinite Class Boycott Over Vacant Posts

Kakching, September 16: Students of Wabagai Higher Secondary School have launched an indefinite class boycott, protesting the alleged failure of the government to fill vacant posts of the Principal, Vice Principal and teachers. Speaking to the media, School Students’ Union Finance Secretary Rani Moijing said the union had earlier demanded immediate appointments and submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand during his visit to the school. She said the union had also appealed through the media for teachers to be posted by September 15, but no action had followed. According to the students’ union, the absence of a Principal has created difficulties in filling forms, applying for scholarships and completing other official work requiring the Principal’s signature.

19-Year-Old Man’s Body Recovered from Imphal River

Kakching, September 16: A body was recovered from the Imphal River at the Uchiwa Nasto area under Mayang Imphal Police Station in Kakching district. Locals spotted the body floating in the river at around 12:30 p.m. and informed the police. The deceased was identified as 19-year-old Md Ariyan, son of Md Talha of Lilong Awang Leikai. According to reports, Ariyan had been missing since the evening of September 14 after leaving his home. Police recovered the body and sent it to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Morgue for postmortem. Further details regarding the circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately available.

Ozone Layer Day Observed with Quiz and Recycling Competitions

Imphal, September 16: Manipur observed the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2026 under the theme ‘Global action for a cooler planet’. The Samagra Shiksha State Implementation Society, Manipur, organised the programme under the Eco Club for Mission LiFE at Chanura Leikol, Imphal East. A state-level quiz competition and a waste-recycling competition on the theme “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Solid Waste” were held as part of the observance. State Coordinator H. Nomita said participants were selected through zonal and district-level competitions. More than 100 primary and upper-primary students took part. The award was presented at the launch of the India Electric Mobility Index 2025 by NITI Aayog in New Delhi. NIA Drops Anti-Terror Charges Against US National, Six Ukrainians

New Delhi, September 16: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has dropped charges under the anti-terror law against American national Matthew Aaron VanDyke and six Ukrainian nationals arrested in March this year, according to media reports. The seven were initially accused of training ethnic armed groups in Myanmar allegedly linked to insurgent organisations operating in India. In its latest chargesheet, the NIA has instead invoked Sections 21 and 23 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, alleging violations related to the entry, movement and stay of foreigners in India. The agency said the accused entered India on valid visas, travelled to Mizoram and later crossed into Myanmar. It also alleged that they transported drones from Europe to Myanmar through India and were involved in an attack on a civilian aircraft.

State to Explore Incentives for Conservators of Puya and Korbek Manuscripts

Imphal, September 15: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand said the State Cabinet will explore the possibility of providing incentives to individuals who preserve ancient Puya and Korbek manuscripts. He was speaking at the inauguration of the 44th Archives Week and Records Exhibition at the State Archives, Keishampat, today. The Chief Minister also inaugurated new Puya Reading Rooms and a Stack Room Building at the complex. JFD Volunteers Shut Government Offices Over NRC Demand

Imphal, September 15: Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation, JFD, volunteers today shut down several government offices across Imphal, demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens, NRC, in Manipur with 1951 as the base year. The offices included the Manipur State Rural Road Development Agency at North AOC, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Office, Range Forest Office at Irilbung, and SDC offices at Bashikhong and Lilong Chajing. Volunteers asked employees to leave the offices from around 1 PM. Members of NIMACCC also shut several government offices, including the SDC Office at Sekmai and Horticulture Office at Khongampat. Posters opposing Census without NRC updation were also displayed.

JFD Rejects Government’s Claim That Agitation Is Causing Public Inconvenience

Imphal, September 15: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation, JFD, has rejected Government Spokesperson and MLA Th. Radheshyam’s statement that the “No Census until NRC update” agitation is causing inconvenience to the public. Speaking to the media at the JFD camp at Soibam Leikai today, Convenor Jitendra Ningomba questioned the government’s claim that the Census was deferred based on public demand. He said the amended Gazette notification issued by the Registrar General of India on September 5 only postpones House Listing in Manipur until further notification. Ningomba said the notification does not state that the Census will be conducted only after NRC updation or identification of illegal immigrants. He also demanded that the government make public its letter to the Centre.

All-Party Delegation, 14 CSOs Seek Early NRC Updation

Imphal, September 15: An all-party delegation and representatives of 14 civil society organisations met Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand at the CM’s Cabinet Hall at the New Secretariat in Mantripukhri yesterday, demanding early updation of the NRC in Manipur with 1951 as the base year. Representatives of ruling and opposition parties, including the Congress, BJP, Forward Bloc, AAP, NPP, RPI, NCP and CPI, attended the meeting along with CSO representatives from different communities. Fourteen CSOs Convenor Shanta Nahakpam said the meeting called for strengthening the existing Assembly resolution and issuing a Gazette notification affirming NRC updation in Manipur. He said a delegation would submit the demand to Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his proposed visit to Manipur in October.

Five CSOs Hold Protest Seeking NRC Updation

Imphal, September 15: Five civil society organisations, AMUCO, AMAWOVA, PLMPAM, COHR and MSF, staged a protest meeting at Kwakeithel Thounaojam Leikai Community Hall today, demanding early updation of the NRC in Manipur with 1951 as the base year. The organisations called on the State Government to take up the matter with the Centre and opposed the implementation of SIR 2026, citing concerns over the inclusion of illegal immigrants. PMAY 2.0 Beneficiaries to Receive Housing Assistance of Rs. 2.5 Lakh

Imphal, September 15: MAHUD Joint Director M. Kapajit said eligible beneficiaries can apply for housing assistance under PMAY 2.0 through their respective Urban Local Bodies. Speaking at a Meet the Press programme organised by DIPR at Keishampat today, Kapajit said each beneficiary will receive Rs. 2.5 lakh, with 90 percent of the funding provided by the Centre and 10 percent by the State. The assistance will be released in three instalments of Rs. 1 lakh, Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 50,000. So far, 9,427 beneficiaries have been approved, with 1,787 houses under construction and the first instalment released to 1,268 beneficiaries.

IMC Faces Manpower Shortage, Says Commissioner

Imphal, September 15: Imphal Municipal Corporation Commissioner M. Nando said the corporation faces challenges in developing Imphal city due to manpower shortages and prevailing conditions in the city. Speaking at a Meet the Press programme organised by DIPR at Keishampat today, Nando said 180 of the 236 sanctioned posts in the corporation are vacant. He said existing staff are nevertheless continuing to carry out works related to MAHUD. Nando also said the new building bye-laws have been enforced in Imphal since December 2025. He appealed to the public to comply with the regulations and warned that violations would attract penalties.

Arms and Ammunition Recovered During Search Operation in Noney

Noney, September 15: A combined team of Khongsang Police and CRPF CoBRA recovered arms and ammunition during a search operation at Taobam Irang village in Noney district yesterday. According to the report, the security team recovered one single-barrel gun, nine live rounds and two Baofeng wireless sets along with a charger. The operation was conducted as part of ongoing security measures in the area. The recovered weapons and ammunition have been taken into custody for further investigation. Security agencies are continuing operations to detect and recover illegal arms and ammunition in vulnerable areas of the state.

Man Arrested With Weapons and Ammunition in Wangoo

Kakching, September 15: A combined team of Kakching Police Commando and 46 Assam Rifles arrested a man with weapons and ammunition during a search operation in the Wangoo Nongyaikhong area under Wangoo Police Station yesterday. The arrested person has been identified as 25-year-old Sorokhaibam Rakesh, son of late S. Shamu, of the same locality. Security forces recovered one INSAS rifle, one .303 rifle, four magazines, 116 rounds of ammunition of different calibres, 31 empty 12-bore cartridge cases and 750 grams of gunpowder. The arrested person and recovered items have been handed over to the concerned authorities for further legal proceedings.

Man Arrested With 29 Grams of Heroin in Imphal East

Imphal, September 15: Heingang Police arrested a man with 29 grams of Heroin No. 4 from a rented house near Mantripukhri Mandir yesterday. According to police, the arrested person has been identified as 31-year-old Abdul Rahaman, son of Fazur Rahaman, from Borayangbi Ward Number 3 in Bishnupur district. The suspected heroin was recovered during a police operation based on information regarding the presence of the contraband. The accused has been taken into custody and further investigation is underway to establish the source of the drug and determine whether others were involved. Legal proceedings will follow under applicable narcotics laws.

Male Body Recovered Near Khurai Kongpal

Imphal, September 15: Police recovered the body of an unidentified man from near Khurai Kongpal Laishram Leikai Awang Ring Road under Porompat Police Station this afternoon. According to reports, a passerby noticed the body around noon and informed the authorities. A team of Porompat Police, along with forensic personnel, reached the spot and examined the scene. The body has been kept at the JNIMS morgue for identification. Porompat Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. Authorities are working to establish the identity of the deceased and determine the cause of death.

Imphal, September 15: The Manipur State Commission for Women, MSCW, observed its 20th Foundation Day at Imperial Hall, Classic Grande, Chingmeirong, today. MSCW Chairperson Th. Tiningpham Monsang said the Commission remains committed to protecting the rights and welfare of women with public support. Social Welfare Commissioner Haobam Rosita highlighted the Commission’s role in safeguarding women’s constitutional and legal rights and addressing their grievances. Thoubal, September 15: The first volume of “Dictionary of Flowering Plants of Manipur,” co-authored by Professor Hanjabam Manoranjan Sharma and Professor Anoubam Radhapyari, was released today. The programme was organised by the College Research Forum. The dictionary documents the names and properties of flowering plants found in Manipur. DM University Imphal Vice-Chancellor in-charge Professor W. Chandbabu, who attended as chief guest, said the publication would be useful for students and younger generations. He also suggested that pictures of plant specimens be included in future editions. Six-Year-Old Girl Rescued After Finger Gets Stuck in Metal Bracket

Imphal, September 15: A six-year-old girl was successfully rescued by the medical team at Shija Hospital after one of her fingers became stuck in a metal lock bracket. When she was brought to the hospital, the affected finger was swollen and had turned whitish, indicating restricted blood circulation. The medical team used specialised instruments to carefully remove the metal bracket without causing further injury. Following the procedure, blood circulation was restored and the girl’s finger returned to normal condition. ‘Chiru Maroi’ Recognised as Novel Variety After Eight Years of Research

Kangpokpi, September 15: Manipur’s indigenous bunching onion variety “Chiru Maroi” has been scientifically recognised as a novel variety following eight years of research. The study was conducted by Dr. P.S. Mariam Anal, Assistant Professor of Horticulture at Central Agricultural University, and Dr. Anil Khar, Principal Scientist and Head of ICAR-IARI Regional Station, Pune. The onion has been identified scientifically as “Allium fistulosum var. Chiru maroi – a novel variety.” The findings were published in the internationally recognised journal Phytotaxa on September 9. Chiru Maroi is traditionally cultivated by the Chiru community in Bungte Chiru and Nungshai Chiru villages of Kangpokpi district.

The final was played at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex today, with YMDO Heirangoithong winning 25-18, 24-26, 25-21 and 25-17. Imphal, September 15: Gopaldev Old Yaiskul Kangkhut received a walkover in the third league match of the 19th Players Trophy League-cum-Knock Out Kang Tournament at Shree Shree Ram Gopaldev Mandop Kangshang, Yaiskul Chingakham Leirak. Gopaldev Old Yaiskul were awarded the match after KKCO Keishamthong Kangkhut failed to field the required number of players to continue the match into the second half. As per tournament rules, KKCO Keishamthong Kangkhut has also been disqualified from participating further in the tournament. CM Says BJP Pursuing NRC Implementation in Manipur

Imphal, September 14: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand said the BJP has been pursuing the implementation of the National Register of Citizens, NRC, in Manipur for the past four years based on the aspirations of the people. He was speaking at the inauguration of a BJP media workshop at Thambal Shanglen in Imphal today. Khemchand said the party had taken a decision on NRC four years ago and subsequently raised the issue with the Centre. He highlighted various initiatives undertaken by the BJP for the welfare of Manipur and promoting peaceful coexistence among communities. Five CSOs Warn of Intensified Agitation Over Manipur Issues

CM Urges Contractual Employees to Avoid Bribery for Regularisation

Imphal, September 14: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has called for an immediate end to the practice of allegedly seeking regularisation of contractual employees through bribery. Addressing a programme at JNIMS, Porompat today, Khemchand said genuine service, dedication and contribution should form the basis for legitimate claims. He expressed concern over reports of alleged bribery involving the regularisation of nurses, which had also appeared in the media and resulted in an FIR. The Chief Minister noted that more than 200 nurses were appointed on a contractual basis during the COVID-19 pandemic. Imphal, September 14: Staff of Mazo Hub’s Chingmeirong branch staged a protest in front of the outlet today, condemning a bomb blast that reportedly occurred at the branch last evening. According to the report, the explosion took place around 6 PM and caused damage to the outlet. No responsibility has so far been established for the incident. Couple Killed, Six-Year-Old Son Injured in Kaimai Attack

Tamenglong, September 13: A couple was killed and their six-year-old son injured after unidentified armed persons allegedly attacked their home at L. Tollen Kuki village under Kaimai Police Station in Tamenglong district early this morning. According to reports received by Impact News, the incident occurred around 4 AM while the family was asleep. The assailants reportedly entered the house and opened fire. The deceased have been identified as Lhingzangai and her husband Seineh Singsit. Seineh Singsit succumbed to his injuries at Silchar Medical College this afternoon, while their son sustained bullet injuries. Security forces have rushed to the area and launched search operations. No arrests have been reported. There has been no official confirmation regarding the identity of the perpetrators.

Tamenglong, September 13: L. Tollen Village Authority Chief and Chairman Lamkholun Haokip has alleged that the attack on the village, which killed two civilians, was carried out by NSCN-IM and ZUF-K. In a press release, Haokip said the incident had reopened memories of the 1993 ethnic violence against the Kuki community. He alleged that the wounds from the earlier violence remain fresh and that the latest attack has revived those memories. The village authority demanded that the Government of India and the Manipur Government provide Central security forces for the protection of Kuki villagers. It also called for action against those responsible for the attack. The allegations have not been independently verified.

Government Says NRC Updation Process Underway

Imphal, September 13: Manipur Government Spokesperson Thokchom Radheshyam said the government is committed to updating the National Register of Citizens, or NRC, in Manipur and appealed to the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation, JFD, to withdraw its agitation. Speaking to the media at the Chief Minister’s Bungalow today, Radheshyam said a team of legislators led by Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam is camping in Delhi to press Central leaders on the issue. He said the state government has already written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking NRC updation with 1951 as the base year and is awaiting Centre’s approval. He added that the Census exercise has been deferred in Manipur following public demand. Radheshyam said the agitation is causing hardship to the public.

DM University Hunger Strike Enters Fifth Day

Imphal, September 13: The indefinite hunger strike by five research scholars of DM University demanding release of their pending stipends entered its fifth day today. Speaking at a press conference outside the university’s Administrative Block, DMU-SU Research Representative Sanasam Lamdaiba said the health condition of some of the hunger strikers has deteriorated, with some requiring hospitalisation. He expressed disappointment over the government’s alleged lack of appropriate action. Lamdaiba said the DMU Students’ Union and research scholars have decided to shut down five colleges under the university from tomorrow as part of the agitation. The institutions include DM College of Science, DM College of Arts, DM College of Commerce, GP Women’s College and LMS Law College. The hunger strike will continue until the pending stipends are released.

Petroleum Drivers Call Off Steering-Down Agitation

Imphal, September 13: The steering-down agitation launched by petroleum product drivers has been called off following assurances from Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand, according to the Petroleum Product Drivers Association. Transporters and Drivers Council Extends Financial Aid to Affected Drivers

Imphal, September 13: The Transporter and Drivers Council, TDC, extended financial assistance to drivers whose vehicles were damaged along National Highway-37 between Imphal and Jiribam during the economic blockade on September 10. The assistance was handed over to the affected drivers at a programme held at Langjing Achouba Truck Parking today. TDC President H. Ranjit provided Rs. 15,000 each to truck drivers S. Ngouba and Romio, while Rs. 7,500 each was provided to drivers Biren and Somorjit. Ranjit said drivers play an important role in transporting goods and essential commodities and noted that several drivers and handymen have lost their lives on state highways. He appealed to bandh and blockade supporters not to target drivers and urged caution while travelling on hilly roads.

TDC Urges Officials to Treat Drivers Respectfully

Imphal, September 13: Transporter and Drivers Council President H. Ranjit has alleged that drivers transporting rice and other essential commodities for government departments have faced repeated mistreatment by officials of CAF and PD and FCI. Speaking during a programme organised by the TDC, Ranjit urged department officials to refrain from such alleged misconduct towards drivers. He stressed the important role played by drivers in transporting essential commodities and maintaining supply chains across the state. Former Patsoi MLA Inspects Long-Pending Water Supply Projects

Imphal, September 13: Former Patsoi Assembly Constituency MLA AK Mirabai today inspected six ongoing water supply schemes in the constituency, which were taken up more than a decade ago under the New Development Bank at a combined cost of over Rs. 18 crore. During the inspection, Mirabai alleged that delays in completing the schemes have caused hardship to residents due to inadequate drinking water supply. Kakching, September 13: Former Wabagai Assembly Constituency MLA and MPCC Treasurer Md Fajur Rahim has said lasting peace can be restored in Manipur and India only when the Congress comes to power. Bird-Trapping Nets Destroyed in Mayang Imphal

Imphal, September 13: The Joint Co-ordination Committee on Wildlife and Biodiversity, JCCWB Manipur, destroyed bird-trapping nets at water bodies in Mayang Imphal Khamenbi, Imphal West, today. The drive was conducted by a JCCWB team led by Active Member Shrinibash Waikhom along with staff of the Mayang Imphal Forest Beat Office. According to JCCWB Convenor Romesh Ningthoujam, the action followed reports of bird trapping using nets and the alleged use of firearms for hunting birds in water bodies under the Mayang Imphal Forest Beat. The organisation appealed to people to stop poaching and warned that hunting birds is punishable under the Wildlife Protection Act.

23 Organisations Condemn Killing of Musician Chongtham Vikram

Imphal, September 13: Twenty-three organisations of Manipur have condemned the killing of renowned guitarist Chongtham Vikram in Delhi. In a joint statement, the organisations said artistes and sportspersons from Manipur have consistently brought laurels to India at the international level. They expressed concern over what they described as continued discrimination and contempt faced by people of Mongoloid origin from the northeastern states in mainland India. The organisations condemned Vikram’s death and called attention to the concerns surrounding the treatment of people from the Northeast. Five Arrested With Over 21 Kg Suspected Cannabis in Imphal

Imphal, September 13: Five persons were arrested after a combined team seized approximately 21.46 kilograms of suspected cannabis during a raid at Sagolband Pukhrambam Leirak on September 11. Based on information regarding the alleged concealment of cannabis, a joint team from Lamphel Police Station and Imphal Police Station, including women personnel, conducted the raid in the presence of an Executive Magistrate. Police recovered 18 packets of suspected ganja concealed in luggage. Those arrested have been identified as 37-year-old Gaigonliu Abonmei and 39-year-old Asma Gonmei from Tamenglong district, 31-year-old Sonik Ningthoujam from Imphal East, 50-year-old Naorem Dashobanta from Imphal West and 31-year-old AS Somichan from Senapati district.

Man Arrested in Firing Incident Targeting CRPF Personnel

Imphal, September 13: Police have arrested a 56-year-old man in connection with a firing incident involving a CRPF personnel at Khonghampat Awang Leikai. The arrested person has been identified as Sheleibam Yaima, son of Sh. Ibomcha, from Sekmai Parao. Police said an empty cartridge case was recovered from an Alto car bearing registration number MN-05A-9332, which was allegedly used in the attack. The accused has been remanded to eight days of police custody to facilitate further investigation into the incident. Police are continuing their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the firing and the alleged involvement of the arrested person.

Kuki Community Observes Black Day in Churachandpur

Churachandpur, September 13: The Kuki community observed Black Day, or SAHNIT, a day of mourning, at the KIC Complex in Tuibuong, Churachandpur, today. The observance was organised under the aegis of Kuki Inpi Churachandpur on the theme “Lest we forget - seeking for justice and the way forward.” Organisers said the day commemorates more than 950 Kuki lives lost during the Naga-Kuki clashes allegedly involving NSCN-IM. They also recalled the killing of 108 villagers from Joupi, Gelnel, Santing and Nungthut in 1993. The programme included a condolence service, one-minute silent prayer, traditional gun salute and floral tributes. Imphal, September 13: The year-long Golden Jubilee celebration of the Progressive Writers Association, Manipur, concluded today at Irawat Bhawan. Speaking at the concluding programme, Association President Ibosana Khuman said members of the organisation have made significant contributions to the literary field through the publication of books of short stories and poetry. He said the Golden Jubilee celebration, which began in 2025 to mark the association’s 50th year, concluded with the distribution of awards for 2025 and 2026. The programme also featured the observance of the Irawat Memorial Anniversary and poetry recitation. Manipur Advisory Board, New Delhi Convenor Professor Rajen Toijamba and PAWF Advisory RK Noyonsana attended the event.

Manipur Crowned Team Champion at North East Bodybuilding Championship

Kohima, September 13: Manipur has been crowned Team Champion at the 2nd Mr. North East India Bodybuilding and Physique Championship 2026 held in Kohima, Nagaland. The championship was conducted from September 11 to 13. Manipur secured three gold medals, with Worthan Lunglo winning in the 60-kg category, Mishap Khapai in the 65-kg category and Pritam Nahakpam in the 70-kg category. M. Pihimas won bronze in the 55-kg category, while Lungreishim Kasar secured bronze in the 60-kg category. Khoirom Bikramjit finished fifth in the 80-kg category, while Phila Yangya also finished fifth in the Women’s Model Physique category.

India, Sri Lanka Clash in Women’s T20 Asia Cup Final

Dubai, September 13: Defending champions Sri Lanka will face seven-time champions India in the final of the 6th Women’s Asia Cup T20 today. The title clash is scheduled to be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates at 8 PM IST. Both India and Sri Lanka have reached the final unbeaten in the tournament. India will look to add another continental title to its record, while Sri Lanka will aim to retain the championship. Petroleum Drivers Stage Sit-In Over Safety and Welfare

Imphal, September 12: Members of the All Manipur Petroleum Product Drivers Association staged a sit-in at the Malom Oil Depot today, pressing for measures to ensure the safety and welfare of petroleum tanker drivers. The association warned that its steering-down agitation would continue until its demands are addressed. Protesters highlighted difficulties faced by drivers transporting essential petroleum products along the National Highways amid the economic blockade called by the UNC. They alleged that security personnel forced drivers to proceed through the blockade, resulting in an incident involving assault on drivers and damage to vehicles. The association demanded a departmental inquiry, action against those responsible, compensation for injured drivers and damaged vehicles, and safe passage for essential commodity vehicles.

Petroleum Tanker Driver Injured During Noney Attack Receives Assistance

Imphal, September 12: IOCL Retail Outlet Dealers have provided financial assistance to petroleum tanker driver Khumukcham Sanamatum, who was injured during an attack amid the economic blockade at Noney. Sanamatum was travelling as part of a petroleum convoy escorted by the CRPF from Jiribam to Imphal on the afternoon of September 10. According to the report, blockade enforcers attacked the convoy when it reached Noney, damaging several trucks and injuring drivers. Sanamatum sustained critical head injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Raj Medicity Hospital at North AOC in Imphal. The financial assistance was extended to support his treatment following the incident.

Three JFD Volunteers Released on PR Bonds

Imphal, September 12: Three Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation, or JFD, volunteers arrested by Imphal East Police for allegedly locking government offices were released today after being produced before a Magistrate. The three were produced before Imphal East District Magistrate P. Praveen Kumar at his residence in Haobam Marak, Imphal West. They were released on personal recognisance bonds of Rs. 30,000 each. Those released were Saka Maring, President of the Working Committee of CNPO, Chandel and JFD spokesperson; Seram Surjit, Co-Convenor of All Kongba Road United Clubs Organisation; and JFD volunteer N. Govin. They later received a reception at the JFD camp at Soibam Leikai Wangkhei Khunou. JFD volunteers said the agitation would continue.

DM University PhD Scholars’ Hunger Strike Enters Day Four

Imphal, September 12: The indefinite hunger strike by five PhD scholars of DM University demanding release of their pending stipends entered its fourth day today. The agitation was launched on September 9 under the banner of the DM University Students’ Union. The protest intensified after a female scholar participating in the hunger strike fell unconscious yesterday afternoon and was admitted to JNIMS Hospital. She received treatment and was discharged last night. Despite the incident, the five scholars are continuing their hunger strike. They are demanding that the university release the pending stipends of PhD scholars. The agitation will continue until their demand for payment of the outstanding stipends is addressed.

Minister Calls for Greater Support to Promote Manipur’s Cultural Heritage

Imphal, September 12: Art and Culture Minister Khuraijam Loken has stressed the need for greater government support to promote and develop Manipur’s rich art and cultural heritage. He was speaking at the inaugural programme of the 16th “Unnou Konde Hunba” and a refresher course-cum-training programme for Amaiba, Amaibi and Pena artistes organised by Uttra Shanglen, Sana Konung, today. Loken said the Department of Art and Culture has only around 120 to 130 employees and receives less than Rs. 50 crore in the state budget. He questioned how the state’s cultural heritage could be developed with limited resources. He said efforts are underway to complete and inaugurate Manipur’s Cultural University at the earliest. The Minister also highlighted the government’s artiste pension scheme and proposed additional schemes for artistes below 60.

Sardar Patel’s 150th Birth Anniversary Observed in Imphal

Imphal, September 12: The Relief Centre for the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons, Manipur, observed the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at JN Dance Academy in Imphal today. Organised under the Ministry of Culture, the programme was held on the theme “Unity is Strength.” Speaking on the occasion, Langthabal MLA Karam Shyam stressed the need for politicians and bureaucrats to understand people’s aspirations and work accordingly for social progress. He also called for unity among different communities and urged people to live together peacefully without creating divisions. The MLA recalled Patel’s contribution to the integration of India and said his leadership and commitment to national unity should inspire the present generation. Traditional dance and music performances were also presented during the programme.

Two-Day International Seminar on Manipuri Literature Begins

Imphal, September 12: A two-day international seminar on Manipuri literature, organised by Leimarol Khorjeikol, or LEIKOL, began today at the Conference Hall of the Institute of Cooperative Management at Lamphelpat. Wangkhei MLA Thangjam Arunkumar, LEIKOL President Ch. Subadani, ICCR Ministry of External Affairs North East Zonal Director Dr. Munish Ningthoujam, ICM Director Dr. Kh. Ramananda and prominent figures from Manipuri literature attended the inaugural programme. LEIKOL Secretary G.A. Ghanapriya said the organisation was founded on October 3, 2001, at the residence of renowned writer late M.K. Binodini, its founding president. She said LEIKOL has completed 25 years and that the seminar seeks to examine the present state of Manipuri literature in Manipur and beyond. Writers from India and abroad are presenting papers online.

Third National Lok Adalat Held Across Manipur

Imphal, September 12: The Third National Lok Adalat of 2026 was held across all District Courts in Manipur today. In Imphal East and Imphal West, the Lok Adalat was conducted at the Lamphel Court Complex through three benches, jointly organised by the Manipur State Legal Services Authority and District Legal Services Authority. Bench One heard cases involving IndusInd Bank, Slice, Manipur Rural Bank and TVS, along with cases from Imphal East Court. Bench Two dealt with cases involving Punjab National Bank, UCO Bank, SBI and Shija Hospital, besides cases from Imphal West Court. Bench Three handled MACT and other insurance cases, along with matters involving Bank of Baroda, Central Bank and Bank of India.

National Lok Adalat Conducted in Chandel

Chandel, September 12: The District Legal Services Authority, Chandel, conducted the Third National Lok Adalat of 2026 at the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Chandel Court Complex today. District and Sessions Judge, Chandel, and Chairman of DLSA Chandel, Alek Muivah, served as the Bench Chairperson. Legal Aid Defence Counsel Deputy Chief Kh. Jacky Lucy and CRISIL Foundation Chandel Centre Manager Songsir Felix participated as members. The National Lok Adalat is aimed at facilitating the settlement of eligible cases through an alternative dispute resolution mechanism. The programme formed part of the nationwide observance of the Third National Lok Adalat of 2026, which was conducted across District Courts in Manipur today.

Security Forces Recover Large Cache of Arms and Ammunition

Churachandpur, September 12: A combined team of Churachandpur District Police and the 2 Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition during an operation in the general area of Thangjing Ridge yesterday. According to a police report, the operation was launched based on intelligence inputs regarding the presence of illegal arms and ammunition in areas adjoining Nalon and Thinghijang villages. The recovered items included two 82-mm mortars, one locally made rocket, one MP5 automatic rifle with scope, four 9-mm carbines with magazines, two pistols with magazines, four single-barrel rifles and four bolt-action rifles. Security forces also recovered mortar bombs, Pumpis and shells, a radio set, bulletproof jacket harnesses and combat boots.

Myanmar National Arrested With 154 Grams of Heroin

Churachandpur, September 12: A joint team of Behiang Police and 37 Assam Rifles arrested a Myanmar national with 154 grams of heroin powder near Border Pillar Number 41 along the Indo-Myanmar border on September 11. The arrested person has been identified as 36-year-old Haukimmang, son of Khamsuanlian, from Vanglai Village in Myanmar. According to the report, security personnel seized 11 soap cases containing a total of 154 grams of heroin from his possession. The arrest was made during the joint operation near the international border. Further legal proceedings in connection with the seizure and arrest are expected to follow as per applicable law.

International Seminar on Kawasaki Disease Begins in Imphal

Imphal, September 12: The two-day 9th National Conference of the Indian Society of Kawasaki Disease began in Imphal today, focusing on awareness, early detection and treatment of Kawasaki Disease. The conference is being held at Classic Grande in Chingmeirong under the theme “Advancing Frontiers in Kawasaki Disease: Pathways to Precision Therapy.” It is organised by the Indian Society of Kawasaki Disease with support from the Paediatric Association of Manipur. Organising Secretary Dr. Nameirakpam Johnson, Consultant Paediatric Rheumatologist at JNIMS, said the disease is not very common in Manipur but delayed diagnosis and treatment can damage coronary arteries and potentially cause heart attacks in children. Experts from Japan and different states of India are participating in the conference.

Imphal, September 12: The three-day Indian Society of Nephrology East Zone Conference, ISNEZCON 2026, is underway at Sangai Hall of Hotel Imphal in North AOC. Organised under the theme “Kidney Health For All: Equitable and Sustainable Nephrology,” the conference began yesterday. It is being organised by the ISNEZCON 2026 Organising Committee under the Manipur Nephrology Forum and Department of Nephrology, RIMS. Speaking at the event, Babina Group of Companies Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Thangjam Dhabali highlighted the financial and emotional burden faced by kidney patients, who often require repeated hospital visits, regular check-ups and prolonged treatment. Etinpham Founder President Calls for Greater Awareness of Sanamahism

Imphal, September 12: Etinpham Founder President L. Budhi Meetei has advocated Sanamahism and stressed that following a single religious path would strengthen unity and courage in society. Speaking to the media at the Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board at 1st Manipur Rifles today, Budhi said Meitei society is currently uncertain about whether its religious practices are rooted in Hinduism or European traditions. He said Sanamahism had once been on the verge of extinction but that the present generation is gradually returning to the faith. Budhi said Etinpham was formed during this transition with the objective of spreading awareness about Sanamahism in Manipur.

Saikul MLA Distributes Welfare Scheme Benefits to Beneficiaries

Kangpokpi, September 12: Saikul MLA Kimneo Hangshing distributed items under various government welfare schemes to beneficiaries in the constituency today. The distribution programme was organised by the Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council at Saikul. Northeast Students Hold Candlelight Vigil for Chongtham Vikram

Vadodara, September 12: Students from the Northeast studying at Central University of Gujarat in Vadodara held a candlelight vigil last evening in tribute to Manipuri pioneer rock guitarist Chongtham Vikram, who died following an alleged incident of racial violence in Delhi. A large number of Northeast students participated in the vigil and observed a two-minute silence in memory of the departed musician. The gathering paid homage to Vikram and expressed solidarity with his family and community following his death. The vigil was held as students remembered the Manipuri musician and raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding his death.

Protest Held in Guwahati Seeking Justice for Chongtham Vikram

Guwahati, September 12: A protest was held near the statue of Bir Tikendrajit at Manipuri Basti in Guwahati, demanding punishment for those responsible for the death of Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram in Delhi. The protest was organised under the initiative of Rajbari Athletic Club, Manipuri Basti, Guwahati. Participants observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed musician. Seven Manipur Athletes Selected for Asian Games

Imphal, September 12: Seven athletes from Manipur, comprising four women and three men, will represent India in rowing, canoeing and kayaking at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, scheduled from September 19 to October 4. In rowing, Haobijam Tendenthoi will compete in the Women’s Four Team 1 event, while Narengbam Laxmi, a Physical Education Teacher with the YAS Department, will serve as coach. In women’s canoeing and kayaking, Phairenbam Soniya will compete in the 500-metre K-2 and K-4 events, Khwairakpam Dhanamanjuri in the 500-metre K-4, and Leichombam Neha in the 500-metre C-2. In the men’s category, Philem Gyaneshwor, Oinam Arjun and Laitonjam Naocha will compete in respective 500-metre events.

Manipur Wins Eight More Medals at National Aquatic Championship

Indore, September 12: Manipur secured eight more medals at the ongoing 42nd Sub-Junior and 52nd Junior National Aquatic Championship at the IDA International Swimming Pool in Indore under the Swimming Federation of India. A. Benhar won gold in the Junior Boys Group 2 Platform event with a score of 320.25 points. H. Bonson also claimed gold in the Boys Group 2 one-metre Springboard event with 273 points, while S. Korounganba won bronze with 262.80 points. Ch. Tomthin won silver and P. Champion bronze in the Boys Group 3 three-metre Springboard event. The pair of S. Korounganba and H. Bonson won silver in the Boys Group 3 three-metre Synchronised Board event, while Lanchenbi Rajkumari added bronze. Five divers from Manipur are participating.

India to Face China in Junior Women’s Hockey Asia Cup Final

Moqi City, September 12: India will face China in the final of the Junior Women’s Hockey Asia Cup tomorrow after both teams won their respective semi-final matches today. In the first semi-final played at Moqi City in China, India defeated South Korea 5-1. In the second semi-final, hosts China registered a 6-0 victory over Japan. The Indian squad is led by Manipur’s Khaidem Shileima Chanu and comprises 20 players, including two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders, six forwards and two alternate players. The final between India and China is scheduled for September 13 at 4:30 PM. India will now look to complete its campaign with the continental title.
