Tension Erupts Between Naga and Kuki Communities in Taphou

Senapati, August 24: Fresh tension erupted in the Taphou area following incidents of arson and an exchange of gunfire between Naga and Kuki communities. A Kuki house at Taphou Kuki village was reportedly set ablaze around 2:40 am, followed by the burning of a Naga house around 4 am. Naga residents later blocked roads and staged protests against the incidents. Gunfire was reported around 9 am, prompting security forces, including Assam Rifles and CRPF personnel, to launch operations. A CRPF personnel identified as Pradeep reportedly sustained a bullet injury and was taken to Senapati District Hospital. Additional forces have been deployed and combing operations are underway.

Assam Rifles Personnel Injured in Tengnoupal Ambush

Tengnoupal, August 24: One personnel of the 3 Assam Rifles was injured after suspected armed groups ambushed a security patrol near the Indo-Myanmar border yesterday evening. The incident reportedly occurred around 4 pm between Yangoupokpi and Charingphei villages. According to police sources, Assam Rifles personnel were conducting an area-domination patrol when suspected insurgents triggered a planted improvised explosive device. The security personnel retaliated, resulting in an exchange of fire. The attackers reportedly fled the area following the gunfight. Additional security forces were subsequently deployed and search operations launched. No arrests have been reported in connection with the incident so far.

Arms and Ammunition Recovered in Sagolmang

Imphal, August 24: A combined team of Imphal East Commandos and 28 Assam Rifles recovered a cache of arms and ammunition during a search operation at the foothills of Sinam Kom village under Sagolmang Police Station today. The operation was reportedly conducted based on intelligence inputs corroborated by 4 Mahar. The recovered items included one 7.62 SLR rifle, one 5.56 INSAS rifle with two magazines, a 9mm pistol, a Pompi gun, a country-made lethal gun and two single-barrel guns. Security forces also recovered three No. 36 hand grenades, a mortar shell, 45 rounds of assorted ammunition, bulletproof plates, jackets and helmets.

Alleged RPF/PLA Cadre Arrested in Imphal East

Imphal, August 24: Commando-Kakching arrested an alleged active cadre of the proscribed RPF/PLA during a search operation at Kiyamgei Awang Leikai under Irilbung Police Station today. Police identified the arrested person as 35-year-old Nameirakpam Sanju Meitei alias Nganba, who was apprehended from his residence. Security forces reportedly recovered an AK rifle, an SMG carbine, nine magazines and 737 rounds of ammunition of different calibres. Three bulletproof plates and three bulletproof jackets were also recovered. The arrested individual has been taken into custody for further investigation, while security agencies are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged possession of the weapons and ammunition.

Man Arrested With Pistol During Checking Operation

Imphal, August 24: Police apprehended a 26-year-old man during a frisking and checking operation at Moidangpok Maning Leikai yesterday. According to the police report, the arrested person has been identified as Oinam Gipson alias Gypsy alias Cheichatpa, son of O. Binod of Kwakeithel Laishram Leikai. Police reportedly recovered a .32 pistol loaded with four live rounds from his possession during the checking operation. The accused was taken into custody for further investigation. Security personnel have been conducting frisking and checking operations at different locations as part of ongoing measures to prevent the movement and use of illegal firearms.

Joint Security Operation Conducted in Kangpokpi

Kangpokpi, August 24: A joint operation involving the CRPF, CRPF Mahila Battalion and Rapid Action Force was conducted at J Songtun village this morning. According to sources, CRPF personnel were deployed around the village on the intervening night of August 23 and 24 before launching the operation at daybreak. Security forces reportedly conducted searches in and around the village as part of the operation. Details regarding any recovery of weapons or arrests were not immediately available at the time of reporting. Further information is expected from the security agencies following completion of the search and verification process.

Jiribam Rally Demands NRC Before Census

Jiribam, August 24: A mass rally was held in Jiribam today demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens before the Census and the return of internally displaced persons to their respective homes before the exercise. Organised by the Jiri United Committee, the rally saw participation from residents from different parts of the district. Protesters marched through Jiribam town towards Irabot Karong before gathering for a public meeting at Jiri Ema Keithel. Participants reiterated their demand that the government should address the NRC issue and facilitate the return and rehabilitation of displaced people before proceeding with the Census exercise.

Keishamthong Women Stage Sit-In Over NRC Demand

Imphal, August 24: Meira Paibi members of Keishamthong Moirangningthou Leirak Nambul Mapan staged a sit-in protest today demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens before the Census. The protest was jointly organised by Sana Janmasthang Club and Keishamthong Leirak Ahum Meira Paibi in support of the ongoing JFD movement. Protesters also demanded that internally displaced persons be resettled before the Census. A participant said people would not accept the Census without NRC updation and IDP resettlement. She also expressed concern over the alleged settlement of outsiders in Manipur and its possible impact on the indigenous population.

14 CSOs Meet Union Minister Kiren Rijiju in Delhi

New Delhi, August 24: A delegation of 14 civil society organisations representing different communities in Manipur met Union Minister Kiren Rijiju at his official residence in New Delhi today. The meeting began around 3:20 pm and lasted nearly an hour. Manipur Government spokesperson and MLA Thokchom Radheshyam was also present. The delegation urged the Centre to properly identify Indian citizens before conducting the Census in Manipur. It submitted a memorandum seeking NRC updation with 1951 as the base year before the Census. The delegation also demanded that delimitation be kept on hold until NRC updation is completed and public concerns are addressed. Convener Santa Nahakpam said Rijiju assured them that the demands would be discussed with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Shiv Sena Manipur Seeks NRC Before Census

Imphal, August 24: Shiv Sena Manipur Pradesh has submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding completion of NRC updation in Manipur before conducting the Census. State President M. Tombi said the memorandum was submitted during his recent visit to New Delhi, where he met Central leaders. Speaking to the media at the party’s State Office in Babupara today, Tombi said NRC updation was essential to address the issue of alleged illegal immigration. He said the memorandum also highlighted data concerning the increase in the number of unrecognised villages in Manipur. Tombi appealed to political leaders to work collectively to safeguard the interests of the state and its people.

Farmers Raise Concern Over Loktak Irrigation Disruption

Bishnupur, August 24: Farmers have raised concerns over the disruption of water supply from the Loktak Lift Irrigation system following a strike by departmental staff. The strike reportedly began after daily-wage and muster-roll employees above 60 years of age were terminated. Farmers said the disruption has affected agricultural activities during the crucial fertilisation season. Speaking at the Loktak Lift Irrigation Pump House, farmer representative Irengbam Newton urged the authorities to revoke the termination orders and extend the service period of the affected employees. He said uninterrupted water supply was essential for agricultural fields and appealed to the authorities to resolve the issue at the earliest.

Manipur University Professor Selected for National Award to Teachers

Imphal, August 24: Manipur University Department of Dance and Music Assistant Professor Dr Pukhrambam Lilabati has been selected for the National Award to Teachers 2026 by the Union Ministry of Education. According to an official notification from the Department of Higher Education, Dr Lilabati is among 21 teachers selected from higher educational institutions and polytechnics across the country. The prestigious award will be presented on September 5 at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi during the Teachers’ Day celebration. The honour includes a Certificate of Merit, Silver Medal and a cash award of Rs 50,000. Her selection has been welcomed by the Manipur University community as a matter of pride for the state and Northeast.

Manipur Technical University Inducts First M.Tech Batch

Imphal, August 24: Manipur Technical University at Takyelpat conducted its induction programme for the university’s first M.Tech batch today and also launched a Disaster Risk Reduction Club. Speaking at the programme, MTU Vice-Chancellor Professor W. Chandbabu said several initiatives have been introduced under the PM-DevINE scheme to strengthen infrastructure and academic programmes. He said the university has expanded its academic offerings and infrastructure since introducing its PhD programme in 2025. Four M.Tech programmes have now been introduced, while training programmes will be conducted using infrastructure at the Engineering College in Heirok. The university is also working towards NAAC accreditation and UGC Section 12(B) status.

Capacity-Building Programme Begins at Manipur University

Imphal, August 24: A six-day capacity-building programme on “Ethnic Conflict, Land, Resources and Development in North East India” began today at the Department of Anthropology, Manipur University. The programme is being organised by the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre of Manipur University under the Ministry of Education. Manipur University Vice-Chancellor Professor R.K. ASI Manipur Holds Surgiquiz and Robotic Surgery CME

Imphal, August 24: The Association of Surgeons of India, Manipur State Chapter organised the Prof. S. Rajendra Singh ASI Surgiquiz 2026 along with a CME programme on robotic surgery at the BMI Auditorium, Babina Hospital Complex, Khabeisoi. Manipur Filmmaker Selected for International Film Lab

Imphal, August 24: Manipur filmmaker and audiovisual artist Tushar Nongthombam has been selected among nine filmmakers from India for the international programme “Intuitive Film Lab 2026.” The programme will be held in Beirut, Lebanon, during October and November this year. As part of the residency, the nine selected Indian filmmakers will develop and produce short films. The programme will provide participants an opportunity to engage in an international creative environment while developing new audiovisual works. Tushar’s selection places a filmmaker from Manipur among the Indian participants chosen for the international initiative and highlights the growing presence of filmmakers from the region in wider creative platforms.

IMD Forecasts Rain, Issues Yellow Warning

Imphal, August 24: The India Meteorological Department’s Imphal centre has forecast rain at several places across Manipur over the next two days and issued a yellow warning for isolated heavy rainfall today. Widespread rain is expected in parts of Senapati, Ukhrul, Kamjong, Tengnoupal and Chandel, while isolated rainfall is likely in Tamenglong, Kangpokpi, Imphal West, Imphal East, Jiribam, Noney, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Churachandpur and Pherzawl districts. More rainfall is forecast in Tamenglong, Jiribam, Noney and Pherzawl tomorrow. The ICAR Agromet Unit at Lamphelpat recorded 0.1 mm of rainfall, with the maximum temperature at 30°C and minimum at 23.5°C.

Imphal, August 24: The State-Level Jawaharlal Nehru Hockey Tournament began today at Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium under the aegis of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Manipur. 34 Manipuri Athletes Named in India’s Asian Games Contingent

Imphal, August 24: A total of 34 sportspersons from Manipur have been selected to represent India in 11 disciplines at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The Games are scheduled from September 19 to October 4. The Indian Olympic Association has finalised a contingent of 492 athletes, comprising 265 men and 227 women, under the Olympic Council of Asia. The Manipuri athletes will compete in boxing, canoeing, kayaking, cycling, fencing, men’s and women’s hockey, judo, rowing, sepaktakraw and weightlifting. Among them are six athletes in men’s sepaktakraw and seven in women’s sepaktakraw, while two athletes each will represent India in women’s kayaking and weightlifting

COCOCO Bars Census Officials in Eastern Keirao Areas

Imphal, August 23: The Co-ordinating Committee of Clubs and Organisations (COCOCO) has barred Census Enumerators and Supervisors from entering areas on the eastern side of Keirao Assembly Constituency. The organisation has also warned government employees residing in the area against participating in Census-related training or duties. Announcing the decision at a press meet in Langdum Maning Leikai, COCOCO President Samjetsabam Meghachandra said the restriction covers areas including Keirao Bitra, Langdum, Khanarok, Chanam Sandrok, Wangkhem, Thiyam Konjil, Phunal Maring, Uran Chiru and other villages. He said the move was intended to press for proper conduct of the Census amid the ongoing NRC demand.

Imphal, August 23: Khurai Puthiba and Nandeibam Leikai Ima Lup organised a sit-in protest at Khurai Tharo Devi Ground today, demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens before the Census. Protesters displayed placards carrying slogans such as “No NRC, No Census” and “Save Manipur.” Participants expressed concern over alleged illegal settlement of outsiders and said NRC updation was essential to protect the interests of indigenous people. COCOMI Urges Government to Act on NRC Demand

Imphal, August 23: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has urged the government to take seriously the ongoing public agitation demanding NRC updation before the Census. In a statement, COCOMI said the demands to conduct NRC first, resettle internally displaced persons in their native places and ensure free movement among communities should be considered and addressed within a reasonable timeframe. The organisation warned that the ongoing agitation should not be taken lightly. COCOMI also appealed to people across Manipur to continue the “No NRC, No Census” movement until the demands are addressed.

CPI Manipur Calls for Early Assembly Elections

Imphal, August 23: The Communist Party of India, Manipur observed its 79th foundation day at Irawat Bhawan in Imphal today. Speaking at the commemorative programme, CPI Manipur State Council Secretary Athokpam Nabachandra said the party would work to strengthen left, democratic, secular and progressive forces in the state ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. He called for the removal of the BJP from power and demanded early elections, alleging that the BJP-led government had failed to adequately address the welfare and development needs of Manipur. He said a fresh mandate would be in the interest of the state and its people. A Manipuri-translated book was also released.

Rally Opposes Non-Muslim Members in Waqf Board

Thoubal, August 23: A mass public rally was held at Sangaiyumpham today opposing the inclusion of two non-Muslim members in the recently constituted 8th Waqf Board of Manipur. The rally was organised by the United Development Committee and the Sangaiyumpham Rally Organising Committee under the banner of the Joint Committee Against the Inclusion of Non-Muslim Members in the Waqf Board. Committee Chairman Moulana Ataur Rahaman demanded that the government remove the two members, arguing that their inclusion could create division among communities. The rally began at Salam Macha, passed through Moirang Palli Bazar and concluded at Sangaiyumpham Idigah Maidan with a prayer service.

Protest Against Waqf Board Appointments in Phundrei

Thoubal, August 23: Residents and community organisations in Phundrei staged a protest rally today against the appointment of two non-Muslim members to the 8th Waqf Board of Manipur. The demonstration was organised by Anjuman Islahi Bashar Phundrei, Jamiatul Ulama Phundrei and Phundrei Village under the banner Joint Committee Against the Inclusion of Non-Muslim Members in the Waqf Board. Protesters raised slogans opposing the appointments and demanded that the government reconsider the composition of the Waqf Board. The demonstration follows similar protests held in other parts of Manipur over the inclusion of non-Muslim members in the board.

PLA Cadre Arrested in Thoubal

Thoubal, August 23: A combined team of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police has apprehended an active member of proscribed People’s Liberation Army, PLA. The self-styled Captain, identified as Thiyam Boycha alias Balin, was arrested from Ushoipokpi in Thoubal district yesterday. Security forces said questioning confirmed his identity as a PLA Captain wanted by the National Investigation Agency, which had announced a bounty of Rs 4 lakh for his capture. He is also allegedly a key accused in the November 13, 2021 Churachandpur ambush in which Colonel Viplav Tripathi, his family members and other personnel were killed. The accused was handed over to Lilong Police Station.

Bir Tikendrajit Statue Unveiled in Cachar

Cachar, August 23: Sekmai Assembly Constituency MLA Heikham Dingo unveiled a statue of Bir Tikendrajit at Rongpur in Assam’s Cachar district today. The statue was dedicated to the public at a ceremony jointly organised by the Manipuri Youth Front of Assam, United Peoples Front and Paona Club Rongpur-One. The event was attended by UCM President Y.K. Dhiren, social activist Nameirakpam Budhachandra, UPF President N. Rupachandra and Manipuris residing in Assam. Speaking at the event, MLA Dingo said the Manipur Government was aware of accommodation difficulties faced by people from Manipur visiting Silchar and was planning to construct a Manipuri Guest House there.

Chinese Humanoid Robot Beats Bolt’s 100m Record

Beijing, August 23: A Chinese humanoid robot named “Lightning” reportedly ran the 100-metre sprint faster than Jamaican athletics legend Usain Bolt’s world-record time during the opening day of the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing. Bolt set his 100-metre world record of 9.58 seconds in 2009. More than 2,000 humanoid robots are reportedly participating in the five-day event, which features 51 events and more than 1,000 competitions across running, football, table tennis and other disciplines. The games are showcasing China’s rapid advances in robotics technology. The event coincides with the 2026 World Robot Conference, where companies displayed thousands of robotics products.

Ningol Van Tree Plantation Held in Imphal East

Imphal, August 23: The Association of MSAP Alumni Manipur and the Central Forest Division organised the third Loushangkhong Ningol Van tree plantation programme at Loushangkhong Primary School and Loushangkhong Khong today. DFO Bishnupur Vikram Suresh Nadhe, local ward member Takhellambam Shyamjai, Professor Dr Th. Asha Sinha and other members participated in the plantation drive. Speaking during the programme, DFO Nadhe highlighted the important role women have traditionally played in Manipur’s social and community development. Two Detained With 114 Litres of DIC Liquor

Ukhrul, August 23: Ukhrul Police have detained two persons and seized 114 litres of DIC liquor as part of the ongoing campaign against illegal drugs and intoxicants. Police also seized a Maruti A-Star four-wheeler bearing registration number MN 06LX 6421 in connection with the operation. The detainees have been identified as 32-year-old Thuingam Vashum of Talui Village and 32-year-old Daniel Zimik of Maku Village. The operation forms part of continuing enforcement measures by police against the illegal transportation and distribution of liquor and other substances. Further legal proceedings are expected following completion of the investigation.

Pensioners’ Association Extends Financial Aid

Imphal, August 23: The Welfare Association of Pensioners of the Departments of Agriculture, Horticulture and Soil Conservation, CADA, Minor Irrigation and College of Agriculture, Manipur has extended financial assistance to two elderly members. The beneficiaries are 94-year-old Wahengbam Gouri of Hiyanglam Awang Leikai, a former Agriculture Officer, and 88-year-old Maibam Ibochouba of Lilong Chajing, a former Assistant Agriculture Officer. Association members visited the two pensioners at their residences and handed over the assistance to help meet medical expenses. Association Secretary Yumnam Shamungou said the organisation would continue supporting members facing financial difficulties, particularly those requiring assistance for healthcare.

Jhulan Festival Celebrated in Imphal

Imphal, August 23: The six-day Jhulan Festival began today with religious and cultural programmes at several locations in Manipur. Nata Sankritan School Sheidamkol observed the festival at Gurumayum Mandap in Haobam Marak Thingel Leikai. Students of the academy performed Jhulan Khela and presented devotional music as part of the celebrations. The traditional festival is observed by Hindu communities with devotional activities, music and rituals associated with the divine swing ceremony. The celebration will continue for six days, with devotees and cultural groups expected to participate in various religious programmes across the state.

Two Books Released at DIPR Auditorium

Imphal, August 23: Two books were released at a programme organised by the Fiction and Poetry Club Manipur at the DIPR Auditorium today. The books are “Khorirol gi Saklon,” a compilation authored by Professor Chirom Rajketan, and “Phaklang da Yekliba Lai,” a collection of children’s short stories by Sarat Salam. “Khorirol gi Saklon” comprises essays and articles, while “Phaklang da Yekliba Lai” contains 16 short stories for children. Both publications have been brought out in Bengali and Meitei Mayek scripts. The release programme brought together writers, literary enthusiasts and members of the cultural community.

‘Khaalashang Tal’ Workshop Concludes

Imphal, August 23: A five-day workshop-cum-production titled “Khaalashang Tal” concluded today at Moirang Kampu Sajeb Community Hall in Imphal East district. The programme was organised by the North Eastern Dance Drama Academy under the Chief Minister’s Artists Assistance Scheme. The valedictory function was attended by social worker Laitonjam Jayananda, NEDDA founder member Loukrakpam Ibomcha and Pung Guru Yumnam Khamba. Guwahati, August 23: A two-day National Seminar on “AI-Enabled Emergency Connectivity in Manipuri Language” was held at the Assam Don Bosco University Azara Campus. Bhubaneswar, August 23: Manipur swimmer Laitonjam Lanchenba clinched his second gold medal at the 52nd Junior National Aquatic Championship in Bhubaneswar. Lanchenba won the Men’s 100-metre Butterfly final with a timing of 54.98 seconds at Kalinga Stadium yesterday. Krishna Yadav of Uttar Pradesh secured silver in 57.11 seconds, while Somnarth Gowda of Karnataka took bronze in 57.73 seconds. The championship, organised under the Swimming Federation of India, concluded today after being held from August 18. Lanchenba had earlier won gold in the 200-metre Butterfly, setting a new national record with a timing of 2:03.73, and also secured silver in the 50-metre Butterfly.

Manipur Announces Jobs for National Games Medalists

Imphal, August 22: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has announced a new Special Recruitment Policy to provide government jobs to National Games medalists from Manipur. The announcement was made during a felicitation programme for 71 sportspersons, including eight who participated in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026, at Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium. Under the policy, vacant sportsperson-reserved posts in relevant departments will be offered to medal winners aged 18 to 23 based on their sporting achievements. Four National Games gold medallists received appointment letters in the Home Department, while 67 athletes were appointed as Physical Education Teachers under the Youth Affairs and Sports Department.

Mirabai Chanu Eyes Asian Games Medal

Imphal, August 22: Padma Shri and Khel Ratna awardee Saikhom Mirabai Chanu arrived in Imphal today to attend the State Government’s felicitation programme for medal winners and participants of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. The Nongpok Kakching-born weightlifter has won three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals in 2018, 2022 and 2026. Imphal-Guwahati Bus Service Brings Relief to Passengers

Kakching, August 22: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has said the resumption of the Imphal–Guwahati bus service will ease the hardship caused by high airfares. Speaking at the inauguration of “Strengthening of Schools under Samagra Shiksha Manipur” at Wabagai Higher Secondary School, the Chief Minister said prolonged unrest had restricted movement and forced people to rely heavily on air travel. He alleged that some airlines charged excessively high fares. Facilities worth around Rs 90 lakh, including Physics, Chemistry and Biology laboratories and separate toilets, were inaugurated at the school. Khemchand also announced road projects worth around Rs 10 crore in Wabagai Constituency.

Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati Bus Service Continues

Imphal, August 22: Public transport services along the Imphal–Dimapur–Guwahati route via NH-2 continued smoothly for the second consecutive day today. Four buses and six Winger vehicles carrying more than 200 passengers departed from ISBT Khuman Lampak at around 10 am. Meanwhile, the 125 passengers who travelled on the inaugural journey yesterday reached Guwahati safely earlier today. The service resumed following the August 8 announcement by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand, Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen and Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen regarding reopening of the highways and restoration of the interstate bus service. NPP Manipur Supports NRC Before Census

Imphal, August 22: The National People’s Party Manipur unit has extended support to the demand for conducting the Census only after updating the National Register of Citizens. Speaking at the party office in Mantripukhri, NPP State President Dr. Lorho S. Pfoze said the party has submitted a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the NPP National President, seeking NRC updation before the Census and delimitation exercises. Copies were also sent to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other concerned authorities. NPP National Vice President Irengbam Hemochandra said conducting the Census while many people displaced by the 2023 conflict remain in relief camps would not be appropriate.

BJP Delegation Meets Giriraj Singh Over NRC

New Delhi, August 22: The BJP Manipur Pradesh NRC and Census Committee met Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh in New Delhi yesterday and pressed for NRC updation in Manipur before the Census. The meeting was part of the committee’s continuing efforts to urge the Centre to address the demand. Committee Convenor K. Saratkumar said the committee had earlier submitted a representation to BJP National President Nitin Nabin on February 17, followed by meetings in March and August. He said Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam also travelled to Delhi on August 19 to raise the issue with Central leaders. The committee plans further meetings with Union ministers.

FOCS Calls for Inclusive Dialogue in Manipur

Imphal, August 22: Federation of Civil Society Organisation Manipur spokesperson Puyam Rakesh has warned that demands for separate land by some communities could further complicate the situation in Manipur. Speaking at a public convention titled “Reshaping the Political Upheaval in Manipur: Issues & Challenges,” jointly organised by FOCS and the Manipur University Students’ Union at Manipur University, Rakesh called for unity among all communities and stressed the need for inclusive dialogue to restore peace and normalcy. He said civil society organisations representing all communities have a responsibility to help find a solution to the ongoing crisis. Manipur Pineapple Exported to Rajasthan

Imphal, August 22: A trial consignment of 500 kilograms of organic Kew variety pineapple from Manipur was flagged off for a Rajasthan-based firm today under the supervision of the Directorate of Horticulture and Soil Conservation. The consignment was sent to M/S Nand Kishore Chaudhary HUF in Jaipur. Mangal Organic Producer Company Limited Chairman Laikhuram Sarmal said around 500 farmers are registered with the company, with pineapple being its main crop. He said the shipment was facilitated under the Market Intervention for Horticulture Products Scheme of MOMA. The company is also registered under the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region Phase-4 in Imphal East district.

Khongyam Club Seeks Repair of Damaged Culvert

Imphal, August 22: Khongyam Bright Star Club of Khongyam Makha Leikai has drawn the attention of authorities to a damaged culvert along the Sugnu-Ithai Inter-Village Road in Sugnu Constituency, Kakching district. According to the club, the culvert over the Khongyam Makha Leikai Sanasam canal is damaged, while the adjoining road is also in poor condition. Around seven feet of the culvert has reportedly been damaged, making vehicular movement difficult. The club said students and the general public are facing considerable inconvenience because of the condition of the road and culvert. It urged the authorities to inspect the site and undertake repairs at the earliest.

Imphal, August 22: The India Meteorological Department’s Imphal centre has forecast rainfall at many places across Manipur today and tomorrow, with a yellow warning issued for heavy rain at some locations. According to the forecast, rainfall is likely at most places across the state during the period. The ICAR Agrometeorological Unit at Lamphelpat recorded 0.8 millimetres of rainfall in the past 24 hours. Manipur recorded a maximum temperature of 30 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 23.5 degrees Celsius today. Residents have been advised to remain alert, particularly in areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall and related weather conditions.

Bhubaneswar, August 22: Manipur swimmer Laitonjam Lanchenba won gold in the Men’s 200-metre Butterfly at the 52nd Junior National Aquatic Championship being held at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar. Lanchenba clocked 2 minutes 03.73 seconds in the final to secure the top position. Yagna Mongam of Andhra Pradesh won silver in 2 minutes 08.22 seconds, while Dhrupad Ramakrishna of Karnataka claimed bronze in 2 minutes 08.90 seconds. The championship is being organised under the Swimming Federation of India from August 18 to 23. Lanchenba had earlier won silver in the 50-metre Butterfly on the opening day. Manipur Powerlifting Championship Underway

Imphal, August 22: The two-day Manipur Powerlifting Championship organised by the Powerlifting Association Manipur is underway at the DM College of Teacher Education Multipurpose Hall. Around 100 powerlifters are competing in different categories under the Indian Powerlifting Federation. Association Secretary Lourangbam Ginot said powerlifting has gained popularity in Manipur and across the country, with Manipuri athletes making their mark at national and international competitions. Imphal, August 19: BJP Manipur Pradesh General Secretary and NRC-Census Committee Convenor K. Saratkumar, along with Uripok MLA Kh. Raghumani and Lamlai MLA Ksh. Ibomcha, left Imphal for New Delhi today to discuss the NRC and Census issue with Central leaders. The leaders reportedly departed on an IndiGo flight around noon. Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam is already in New Delhi in connection with the issue. More BJP MLAs, including Dr. S. Ranjan, P. Brojen and T. Robindro, are expected to travel to Delhi tomorrow. The delegation is expected to press the Centre on Manipur’s concerns regarding NRC updation and the Census.

14 CSOs Back MLAs’ Delhi Mission

Imphal, August 19: Fourteen civil society organisations of Kangleipak have extended support to the ongoing Delhi visit by Manipur MLAs seeking NRC updation before the Census. Speaking at the IPSA office in Keishampat, Convenor Shanta Nahakpam said representatives of the CSOs would also leave for New Delhi tomorrow to meet Central leaders and reiterate the demand. He said the organisations want Indian citizens to be identified through NRC before the Census and delimitation exercises. The CSOs also expressed support for tripartite talks involving the Centre, State Government and civil society organisations before delimitation is undertaken.

Census Training Cancelled in Lilong

Sub-Divisional Officer Lilong Moirangthem Priyaroshni issued a release today informing that the order issued on August 17 regarding the training programme now stands cancelled. Imphal, August 19: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee President Okram Ibobi has questioned the State Government’s failure to press the Centre to defer the Census before the Gazette notification was issued. Speaking at Congress Bhawan in Imphal today, Ibobi welcomed the decision of some BJP MLAs to travel to New Delhi to press Central leaders for NRC updation before the Census, but said the move came late. He said Congress supports the demand raised by civil society organisations and the public. Mekola Protesters Demand NRC Before Census

Imphal, August 19: Meira Paibi members and internally displaced persons at Mekola Gulap Higher Secondary School blocked Mekola Bazar today in support of the JFD strike. Protesters urged elected representatives to protect indigenous interests and oppose what they described as divisive policies. MPCC Spokesperson Dr. S. Manaoton also backed the “No Census without NRC” demand, warning that conducting the Census without NRC could marginalise indigenous communities. He urged the Centre and State Government to initiate NRC to identify illegal immigrants. Sanjoy Aahanthem Demands Cabinet Stand on Census

Bishnupur, August 19: Social activist and intending candidate for Kumbi Assembly Constituency Sanjoy Aahanthem has criticised the State Government’s decision to send MLAs to New Delhi to discuss the NRC-Census issue. Describing the move as a sign of indecision, Sanjoy demanded that the Census be deferred until NRC updation, using 1951 as the base year. He warned that conducting the Census first could affect the political, cultural, economic and identity rights of indigenous people. Sanjoy urged the BJP-led State Government to immediately convene a Cabinet meeting and adopt a firm position on deferring the Census until the NRC issue is resolved.

Jiribam Transporters Demand SP’s Transfer

Jiribam, August 19: The All Jiribam Road Transport Drivers Union staged a protest demanding the transfer of Jiribam SP Prakhar Pandey, alleging harassment and disruption of transport operations. Speaking at a protest meet outside Congress Bhawan in Babupara, Union Secretary Kh. Gopeshor alleged that drivers arriving from other states face unnecessary difficulties and that vehicles are frequently stopped and challaned without valid reasons. He said several goods-laden trucks bound for Imphal have remained stranded in Jiribam for more than a month, causing hardship to drivers. The union demanded the SP’s immediate transfer and an end to alleged harassment of drivers.

NH-37 Drivers Launch Steering-Down Protest

Jiribam, August 19: Drivers operating along National Highway-37 have launched a steering-down protest demanding removal of Jiribam SP Prakhar Pandey and an end to alleged harassment and extortion. The Transporters and Drivers Council said drivers have stopped plying vehicles, including those under CRPF escort, as part of the protest. TDC President Hijam Ranjit alleged that drivers are being harassed, extorted and heavily fined at checkpoints. The council also demanded a refund of fines imposed on four goods vehicles and warned that passenger services would be suspended if the Jiribam SP is not removed immediately. The protest is supported by drivers’ unions from Silchar, Jiribam and Imphal.

Man Arrested With Suspected Heroin in Imphal East

Imphal, August 19: Imphal East Commandos arrested a 28-year-old man today for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected heroin to Kohima, Nagaland. Police identified the arrested person as Md. Eliyas Khan, a resident of Hatta Central Masjid Road, Imphal East. Acting on reliable intelligence, security personnel intercepted him and recovered 10 soap cases containing around 130 grams of suspected Heroin No. 4. The accused was taken into custody for further investigation. Police are examining the alleged drug trafficking network and the intended destination of the seized contraband as part of continuing efforts to curb the movement of narcotic substances in the state.

Workshop on Eye Donation and Cornea Transplantation Held

Imphal, August 19: A state-level workshop on “Hospital Cornea Retrieval Program – Strengthening Eye Donation and Cornea Transplantation in Manipur” was held today at MS Conference Hall, JNIMS. The programme was organised by the Manipur Government’s National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment, National Health Mission and Directorate of Health Services. Health Services Director Dr N. Hemantakumar said 39 corneal transplants have been successfully conducted since the State Eye Bank opened on November 29, 2023. He also said more than 250 people have so far pledged to donate their corneas. The workshop focused on strengthening eye donation and transplantation services in the state.

In the final, Krishna Yadav of Uttar Pradesh won gold with a timing of 25.48 seconds, while Lanchenba finished second in 25.73 seconds. Ronel Netnam of Tamil Nadu claimed bronze with 25.76 seconds. The championship, organised under the aegis of the Swimming Federation of India, began yesterday and will continue until August 23. Imphal, August 18: The 48-hour statewide general strike called by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) is currently underway, demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens before the Census in Manipur. Normal life remained affected across the state, with shops, markets, educational institutions and private establishments staying closed. Vehicular movement was also largely disrupted, while government offices recorded low attendance. Major commercial centres including Khwairamband Ima Keithel, Paona Bazar and Thangal Bazar remained shut. Road blockades were reported in Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur, while security forces were deployed at key locations. Essential services were exempted.

Jiribam Hit by JFD General Strike

Jiribam, August 18: The JFD-sponsored 48-hour general strike affected normal life in Jiribam district. Strike supporters took to the streets and blocked roads and district highways, disrupting vehicular movement. Jiri Market presented a deserted appearance as shops remained closed and commercial activities came to a halt. Schools and colleges also remained closed during the strike. Security forces were deployed at various locations as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incident. The strike has been called to demand updation of the National Register of Citizens before the Census and has received support from organisations representing communities in both the hills and valley.

Thoubal Witnesses Road Blockades During Strike

Thoubal, August 18: The 48-hour JFD general strike has also affected normal life across Thoubal district. Supporters blocked roads and inter-district highways by burning tyres and placing logs, while shops and businesses remained closed. Meira Paibi groups staged road-block demonstrations near the Thoubal DC Complex and Athokpam Market. The Meitei Community Joint Coordinating Committee, comprising 18 clubs, also blocked roads at Babu Keithel. At Khongjom Market, the Khongjom Circle Meira Paibi Forum and local clubs held a sit-in demanding NRC updation before the Census. Markets across the district wore a deserted look as commercial activities remained largely suspended.

Youth of Pangantabi Support General Strike

Kakching, August 18: Members of Youth of Pangantabi joined the ongoing 48-hour statewide general strike called by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation. YOP members came out to block the Indo-Myanmar Road in Kakching district as part of the protest demanding NRC updation before the Census. The road blockade disrupted normal movement in the area, although emergency and essential services were reportedly allowed to pass. The participation of local youth groups added to the wider mobilisation in support of the JFD’s demand. The strike has affected transportation, business activities and educational institutions across several districts of Manipur.

Protester Injured in Tear Gas Firing at Kwakeithel

Imphal, August 18: A 20-year-old protester was injured after security forces fired tear gas shells during the JFD general strike at Kwakeithel Traffic Island today. The incident occurred around 12:30 pm when protesters blocking Tiddim Road reportedly attempted to stop a convoy of 33 Assam Rifles vehicles travelling from Keishampat. Security forces fired several tear gas shells after stones and bamboo poles were allegedly thrown at the vehicles. The injured protester, Khundrakpam Arnold of Khoijuman, sustained a leg injury and was taken to Asian Hospital for treatment. Protesters also blocked the road at Khagempalli Nganapi Bridge, raising “No NRC, No Census” slogans.

6. Four Women Injured During Porompat Protest

Imphal, August 18: Women protesters demanding “No NRC, No Census” staged a demonstration outside the Imphal East Deputy Commissioner’s office gate at Porompat amid heavy rainfall. The protest formed part of the JFD-led movement against conducting the Census before updation of the National Register of Citizens. During the demonstration, police reportedly fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters. At least four women were injured in the incident and were subsequently taken to JNIMS Hospital for treatment. TAKDO Extends Support to JFD Movement

Imphal, August 18: The Thangmeiband Kendra Development Organisation has extended support to the JFD-led movement demanding NRC updation before the Census. TAKDO President Khulem Nobokumar said the organisation and residents of Thangmeiband would support the ongoing agitation. General Secretary Sundari Loitongbam expressed concern over the displacement of people since May 3, 2023, and said TAKDO has opened three relief camps in the constituency. Bishnupur, August 18: Internally displaced person Wangjam Premjit has opposed the plans of the State and Central governments to conduct the Census in Manipur before addressing the concerns of displaced families. Originally from Torbung, Premjit is currently staying at the Thambal Marik College Relief Camp in Oinam. He said internally displaced persons should first be resettled in their respective homes in a secure and peaceful environment. Premjit also called for updation of the NRC to identify unauthorised entrants from Myanmar. He maintained that the Census should be conducted only after the issues of displacement, security and NRC updation have been addressed.

CM Supports NRC Before Census, Opposes Bandhs

Imphal, August 18: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has said the Manipur Government supports the public demand for conducting the Census only after updation of the National Register of Citizens. The Chief Minister noted that the State Assembly had earlier passed a resolution seeking NRC updation and said the government is making efforts to address public concerns. However, Khemchand appealed to protesters to adopt democratic forms of agitation other than bandhs, stating that shutdowns adversely affect the state’s economy and students’ education. N Biren Raises NRC Demand With Amit Shah

Imphal, August 18: Former Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren has said he expects a positive response to the demand for NRC updation before the Census in Manipur. Speaking to the media at Imphal International Airport after returning from New Delhi, Biren said he discussed the issue with Union Home Minister Amit Shah during their meeting on Monday. He said he raised the State Cabinet’s February 2023 decision to initiate the NRC process in Manipur and urged the Union Home Minister to consider the public demand. Biren also stressed the need to identify and remove illegal immigrants, claiming that a report has identified around 926 unauthorised villages in the state.

Government Team to Press Centre on NRC Updation

Imphal, August 18: Manipur Government Spokesperson Dr Sapam Ranjan has said the state will urge the Centre to expedite NRC updation before the Census. Speaking at a press conference at DIPR Office Imphal today, Dr Ranjan said a team of elected representatives will leave Imphal tomorrow to take up the issue with the Central Government. He said the State Assembly had passed resolutions in 2022 and 2024 calling for NRC implementation. He also cited communications sent by the State Government to the Union Home Ministry regarding the matter. Dr Ranjan said NRC updation is important in view of demographic changes and concerns over unauthorised immigration, while appealing for democratic and non-violent protests.

KCP Taibanganba Cadres Surrender

Imphal, August 18: Forty-six cadres of the Kangleipak Communist Party Taibanganba Group, including Chairman Haobijam Dilip alias Taibanganba, surrendered before Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand at a Home Coming Ceremony at the 1st Manipur Rifles Parade Ground. The group’s Vice Chairman, General Secretary, General Secretary (Organisation and Public Relations) and Finance Secretary were among those who laid down arms. The cadres handed over 20 firearms, 216 rounds of ammunition and three explosives to the government. Welcoming the surrender, the Chief Minister urged other armed groups to join the peace process and assured support to those choosing the path of peace.

New Delhi, August 18: Rajya Sabha MP Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi has been nominated as a member of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, commonly known as DoNER. The nomination was made through a notification issued by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs on August 17, 2026. 150 Essential Goods Trucks Leave Jiribam for Imphal

Jiribam, August 18: A convoy of 150 trucks carrying essential commodities left Jiribam for Imphal this morning under security escort. Among the vehicles, 68 trucks were carrying essential supplies including LPG, petrol and diesel. The movement comes amid continuing efforts to maintain the supply of essential commodities to the Imphal valley during the ongoing disruption caused by the JFD general strike. At the same time, 150 empty trucks left Imphal for Khongsang around 7 am under security escort. The escorted movement is intended to ensure uninterrupted transportation of essential goods along the Jiribam-Imphal route.

Imphal, August 18: Pebam Jack has been appointed as the State President of the Lok Janashakti Party (Ram Vilas) Youth Wing, Manipur unit. Woman Arrested With Suspected Heroin in Churachandpur

Churachandpur, August 18: A 26-year-old woman was arrested with 2.6 kilograms of suspected heroin powder in the Tuibong area of Churachandpur. According to a police press release issued on August 17, the joint operation was conducted on August 14 by personnel of Churachandpur Police Station, Women Police Station and 37 Assam Rifles based on credible information about suspected contraband. Police identified the arrested woman as Nemneihoi Touthang. She was allegedly found in possession of 197 soap cases containing the suspected heroin powder. The arrested person and seized contraband have been taken up for further legal proceedings and investigation under relevant narcotics laws.

NAB Arrests Alleged Drug Smuggler

Kangpokpi, August 18: The Narcotics and Affairs of Border Police Station has arrested alleged drug smuggler Manikumar Sunari, son of Gangaram Sunari of Saitu Gamphazol in Kangpokpi district. The arrest was made during an investigation into a case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. The case relates to the earlier seizure of thousands of bottles of cough syrup containing codeine. NAB Police have been investigating the alleged supply and distribution network linked to the seized contraband. Sunari’s arrest is part of continuing action by the state’s anti-narcotics authorities against the trafficking and illegal distribution of controlled substances.

Mild 3.5-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Ukhrul

Ukhrul, August 18: A mild earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale struck Ukhrul district at 9:46 am today. According to the official report, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre located at 24.986 degrees latitude and 94.412 degrees longitude. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage following the tremor. Manipur lies in a seismically active region and experiences occasional low-intensity earthquakes. Authorities have not reported any major disruption resulting from today’s tremor. Residents in the affected area felt the shaking, but the earthquake did not cause any reported loss of life or property.

Seminar on Church Administration Begins in Noney

Noney, August 18: A two-day seminar on Church Administration and Financial Accountability began today at Longmai Part 4 Baptist Church in Noney district. The seminar is being organised by the Longmai Zone of the Rongmei Baptist Churches Council under the theme “Together We Build: Strong Families, Stronger Church.” The programme focuses on strengthening church administration and promoting greater accountability in financial management. Church leaders and members are participating in the seminar, which aims to encourage responsible institutional practices while strengthening families and church communities. The programme will continue for two days with discussions and sessions centred on the theme.

Manipur Wins 15 Medals at National Triathlon Championship

Imphal, August 18: Manipur athletes secured 15 medals, including eight gold, three silver and four bronze, at the ITF National Age Group Triathlon Championship held in Pune from August 14 to 16. Around 460 athletes from across India competed in the championship under the aegis of the Indian Triathlon Federation. Manipur’s gold medallists included Nongmaithem Dhananjoy, Thokchom Gautam, Nongmaithem Nelshi, Laikhuram Biten, Shaikhom Bishworjit, Ngangom Dewanjit and Akoijam Langlen. Silver medallists were Telheiba Soram, Mohammed Danish and Leishangthem Sayonbi, while Leishangthem Rebison, Nongmaithem Nelshi, Sarungbam Athouba and G.A. Kenyson won bronze.

Khundrakpam Team A Wins Kang Tournament Match

Imphal, August 18: Khundrakpam Team A Kangkhut emerged victorious in the third league match of the first Sinam Nodiachand Memorial Invitation League-cum-Knockout Kang Tournament. Organised by Laijing Ningthou Apunba Kangkhut Thangmeiband with funding support from the Sinam Nodiachand Memorial Foundation, the match was played yesterday. Khundrakpam Team A defeated LAK Team A Thangmeiband Kangkhut 12-10. A total of 12 Kang teams from different parts of Manipur are participating in the tournament, divided into four groups for the league round. The fourth league match will be played on August 21 between Khundrakpam Team A Kangkhut and Singjamei Team K.
