CM Launches Mega Anti-Drug Campaign, Reaffirms Commitment to Peace

Imphal, Aug. 3: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand today launched the 10 Crore Addiction Free Pledge Mega Campaign under the Nasha Mukta Bharat Abhiyan and SPANDAN (Spiritual Partnership Against Narcotic Drug Abuse) at Pheidinga in Imphal West. Organised by Brahma Kumaris Imphal, the campaign will continue until August 20 with the objective of promoting a drug-free society. Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and stressed that protecting the youth from substance abuse is essential for the country's development. Referring to the ongoing situation in Manipur, he said trust among communities has gradually improved and expressed hope that lasting peace would be achieved through dialogue and mutual understanding. Khemchand reiterated that the government remains fully committed to restoring peace and assured that justice would be delivered in every crime committed during the ongoing crisis.

Home Minister Calls for Collective Action Against Drug Abuse

Imphal, Aug. 3: Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam has called for collective efforts to eradicate drug abuse, stating that India can achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047 only if its youth become disciplined, responsible and free from substance abuse. Speaking at the launch of the 10 Crore Addiction Free Pledge Mega Campaign, Govindas said the Nasha Mukta Bharat Abhiyan is a nationwide initiative aimed at eliminating drug abuse across the country. Referring to Manipur, he described substance abuse as one of the state's most serious challenges and urged society to work together to address the issue. Home Minister also appealed to people to strengthen unity by moving beyond the hill-valley divide and promoting brotherhood among all communities. He added that developmental activities and public outreach programmes have gained momentum under the leadership of the Chief Minister. Several medical professionals, social activists and Brahma Kumaris representatives attended the programme.

Union Tourism Minister to Visit Manipur for Two-Day Review

Imphal, Aug. 3: Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat is scheduled to visit Manipur on a two-day tour to review tourism and cultural development projects in the state. State Art and Culture and Tourism Minister Khuraijam Loken said the Union Minister has directed Central officials to ensure that tourism and culture-related projects are implemented without unnecessary delay. Speaking after meeting Shekhawat in New Delhi, Loken said he highlighted Manipur's tourism potential and rich cultural heritage while seeking Central support for infrastructure development, sustainable tourism and destination promotion. According to the Minister, Shekhawat assured all possible assistance from the Centre for the development of Manipur's tourism sector. During his visit, the Union Minister is expected to review ongoing projects and explore new initiatives aimed at strengthening tourism infrastructure and promoting Manipur as a key tourism destination in the Northeast.

MLA Robindro Urges Collective Efforts to Strengthen Government Schools

Imphal, Aug. 3: Mayang Imphal MLA K. Robindro has stressed the need for teachers, parents and local communities to work together to improve government schools and increase student enrolment. Speaking after inaugurating newly constructed classrooms, laboratories, libraries and toilet complexes at five government schools in Uchiwa, Samusang Santipur, Phabakchao, Mayang Imphal and Laphupat Tera, Robindro said community participation is essential for improving the quality of education. Referring to the increasing cost of private education, he urged residents to support government schools through collective efforts. Education (Schools) Director Ng. Bhogen also addressed the programme, stating that the department has introduced an area-based grouping policy for government schools with low enrolment to improve resource utilisation. He said the policy would also help address teacher shortages and called on teachers to maintain professionalism and accountability in discharging their responsibilities.

AITUC Warns of Agitation Against Airtel Over Employees' Wage Demands

Imphal, Aug. 3: The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has warned of intensifying its agitation against Airtel, including disrupting the company's services in Manipur from September 15, if employees' demands remain unresolved. Addressing the media at the Manipur Press Club, AITUC General Secretary Laishram Sotinkumar alleged that Airtel workers in the state receive only ₹6,500 per month and demanded that the monthly honorarium be increased to ₹14,000. He said the union has repeatedly raised issues related to wages and employee welfare with the company. Sotinkumar claimed that the Airtel Shillong Regional Office had earlier assured the union that the demands would be discussed. However, he warned that if no meeting is held by September 15, the union and employees will intensify their agitation, including suspending Airtel services across Manipur until their grievances are addressed.

BJP Delegation Continues Peace Outreach in Jiribam, Meets Displaced Families

Imphal, Aug. 3: A BJP Manipur Pradesh delegation led by General Secretary P. Premananda Meitei continued its five-day peace outreach programme in Jiribam, interacting with internally displaced persons (IDPs) and community leaders from different communities. The delegation visited relief camps housing Hmar, Paite and Kuki families, where members heard grievances and assured residents that their concerns would be conveyed to the government. The team also met Bengali community leaders, emphasising the importance of dialogue and peaceful coexistence. During visits to Jakuradhar and Borobekra, the delegation interacted with local residents and displaced Meitei families, assuring them of the government's commitment to safe rehabilitation and restoration of normalcy. Discussions were also held with Bishnupriya community leaders on promoting communal harmony. Later, the delegation met Jiribam Deputy Commissioner Arvin Hanglem to review relief measures, rehabilitation efforts and initiatives aimed at restoring lasting peace in the district.

Alleged KCP (Apunba) Cadre Arrested in Imphal East

Imphal, Aug. 3: Security forces have arrested an alleged active cadre of the banned KCP (Apunba) outfit from Imphal East district in connection with alleged extortion activities. According to security sources, the accused has been identified as Joyson Khangembam, also known by the aliases Loyumba and Tondonba, aged 28. He was arrested from Khongman Zone V East under the jurisdiction of Irilbung Police Station during a security operation. Police alleged that the accused was actively involved in extortion-related activities in the area. Authorities said further investigation is underway to ascertain his alleged network and involvement in other unlawful activities. Security forces have continued intensified operations across the state as part of efforts to curb extortion and insurgent activities.

Security Forces Arrest Alleged KCP (MFL) Cadre, Recover Firearms

Imphal, Aug. 3: Security forces have arrested an alleged active cadre of KCP (MFL) from Imphal East district and recovered firearms and ammunition from his possession. The accused has been identified as Lourembam Robinson, also known as Benin, aged 44. He was apprehended from Nongada Thongkhong under Lamlai Police Station during a security operation. According to security sources, police recovered two .32 calibre pistols, two magazines and nine rounds of live ammunition from his possession. Authorities alleged that Robinson was involved in the illegal possession, concealment and transportation of arms and ammunition. The arrest forms part of the ongoing crackdown against illegal arms and insurgent activities in the state. Further investigation is underway to establish links with other unlawful activities.

Man Arrested with Over 13 Kilograms of Opium in Churachandpur

Imphal, Aug. 3: Security forces have arrested a man and seized more than 13 kilograms of opium during a raid in Churachandpur district. According to police, the accused has been identified as Seikhogin Mate, 43, a resident of T. Khuangkhai Village under Sangaikot Sub-Division. He was arrested after security personnel conducted a search operation at his residence. Police said approximately 13 kilograms and 230 grams of opium were recovered during the raid. The accused has been taken into custody, and legal proceedings have been initiated under relevant provisions of the law. The seizure is part of the continuing anti-narcotics drive being carried out across Manipur to curb the cultivation, trafficking and illegal possession of narcotic substances.

Naga Civil Bodies Reiterate Demand for Early Implementation of Framework Agreement

Chandel, Aug. 3: Naga civil society organisations on Sunday observed the 11th anniversary of the Indo-Naga Framework Agreement at Chandel district headquarters, reiterating their demand for the early implementation of the 2015 accord. The programme, organised under the theme "Commemorating a Historic Commitment, Reaffirming Our Identity, and Advancing Our Shared Future," included a public meeting, rally and declaration. It was jointly organised by the Chandel Naga People's Organisation, Naga Women Union Chandel and Naga Students' Union Chandel. Participants adopted a declaration urging the Government of India to implement the Framework Agreement "in letter and spirit" at the earliest, describing the prolonged delay as a denial of the Nagas' historical and political rights. A rally was also held, with participants carrying placards calling for peace, justice, recognition of the Naga National Flag and Constitution, and respect for human rights.

Shija Hospital Marks Organ Donation Day, Calls for Greater Public Awareness

Imphal, Aug. 3: Shija Hospitals and Research Institute (SHRI) observed the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day by urging people to overcome misconceptions about organ donation and support life-saving transplant programmes. Speaking at the event, Chairman-cum-Managing Director Dr. Palin Khundongbam said organs donated by a deceased donor could save up to eight lives. He unveiled a memorial wall dedicated to organ donors and highlighted that organ transplant surgeries have been successfully performed in Manipur since 2023. Dr. Palin stressed that the number of organ donors remains far lower than the number of patients awaiting transplants and called for greater public awareness. He also warned against illegal organ trading, noting that buying or selling organs is a punishable offence. Families of organ donors were honoured during the programme.

RIMS Observes Indian Organ Donation Day, Encourages Voluntary Pledges

Imphal, Aug. 3: The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, observed the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day with an awareness programme under the national campaign Angdaan Jeevan Sanjeevani Abhiyaan. RIMS Director Prof. G. Sunilkumar described organ donation as a noble and life-saving act and encouraged people, especially students, to register as organ donors through the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation portal after discussing the decision with their families. He highlighted the growing demand for organ transplants, RIMS' successful kidney transplant programme, the proposed State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation and the upcoming Eye Bank in Manipur. The programme included expert talks, recognition of contributors to organ donation initiatives and voluntary online organ donor registrations.

Manipur Launches National Breastfeeding Week Campaign

Imphal, Aug. 3: Director of Health Services Dr. N. Hemantakumar launched the week-long National Breastfeeding Week 2026 campaign at the State Family Welfare Training Centre, Lamphel, emphasising the importance of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of a child's life. Addressing the programme, Dr. Hemantakumar said breast milk is the ideal source of nutrition for newborns and plays a vital role in protecting infants against diseases while also benefiting mothers. He noted that exclusive breastfeeding rates in Manipur remain below the desired level and called for greater public awareness. The programme was attended by State Health Society Mission Director Dr. M. Dinesh, Director of Family Welfare Services Dr. N. Bino, paediatricians and health officials, who stressed the need to promote breastfeeding as an essential component of maternal and child healthcare.

JNIMS Organises Voluntary Blood Donation Camp

Imphal, Aug. 3: The 43rd voluntary blood donation campaign was organised at the JNIMS Blood Centre under the theme "Give Blood, Give Life – Be a Hero." The camp was jointly organised by the Indian Red Cross Society, Bishnupur District Branch, Green Brigade Foundation, Life Saver Manipur and the Blood Centre, JNIMS. A total of 14 voluntary donors, including seven women, donated blood during the programme. Organisers highlighted the importance of regular voluntary blood donation in ensuring adequate blood supplies for emergency medical care and urged more citizens to participate in future donation drives.

Foundation Stone Laid for Rani Gaidinliu Girls' Hostel in Pune

Imphal, Aug. 3: Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho has laid the foundation stone for the Rani Gaidinliu Girls' Hostel at Katraj in Pune, Maharashtra. The hostel, estimated to cost ₹10 crore, is being developed by a Maharashtra-based NGO under the name Late Srimati Jamnabai Firodia North East India Bhavan – Rani Gaidinliu Girls' Hostel. It aims to provide accommodation for girls from the Northeast, particularly students from Manipur. The foundation-laying ceremony was attended by Force Motors Chairman Abhay Firodia and several representatives from Manipur. The hostel is expected to provide safe and affordable accommodation for students pursuing higher education in Maharashtra.

NIT Manipur Ready for 13th Convocation Ceremony

Imphal, Aug. 3: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Manipur will hold its 13th Convocation at the City Convention Centre, Palace Compound, on Tuesday. Registrar Prof. Kh. Tomba said degrees and certificates will be awarded to 299 graduates, including B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc and Ph.D scholars. Six subject toppers and the overall best graduate will receive Gold Medals and the Chairman's Gold Medal. Prof. Tomba also highlighted a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between NIT Manipur and IIT Jodhpur, under which NIT students will be able to pursue courses, postgraduate studies and placement opportunities through the premier institute.

Noney Launches Campaign Against Child Labour

Noney, Aug. 3: A district-wide rescue and rehabilitation campaign against child labour was launched in Noney under Mission Vatsalya as part of the World Day Against Child Labour observance. Deputy Commissioner Vidyamari Sridhar, who also chairs the District Task Force on Child Labour, officially launched the campaign organised by the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Noney. A child labour awareness poster campaign was also inaugurated to educate the public about the harmful effects of child labour and the importance of protecting children's rights. Authorities said the campaign will focus on awareness, rescue operations and rehabilitation measures for affected children.

IMD Issues Yellow Warning as Rainfall Continues Across Manipur

Imphal, Aug. 3: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall across Manipur over the next two days and issued a Yellow Warning for heavy rain at isolated places. Widespread rainfall is expected in Tamenglong, Senapati, Ukhrul, Kamjong, Tengnoupal and Chandel districts, while isolated rainfall is likely in Kangpokpi, Imphal East, Imphal West, Jiribam, Noney, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching and Churachandpur. The ICAR Agrometeorological Unit at Lamphelpat recorded the day's maximum temperature at 31°C and the minimum at 23.5°C. Residents have been advised to remain alert in areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall.

Manipur Athletes Shine as India Finishes Fourth at Commonwealth Games

Imphal, Aug. 3: Manipur's athletes delivered an impressive performance at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, helping India finish fourth in the overall medal standings. India secured 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze medals, while Australia topped the medal table. Eleven athletes from Manipur represented the country. In weightlifting, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won gold, Chanambam Rishikanta claimed silver and Sorokhaibam Bindyarani secured bronze. Boxer Mandengbam Jadumani also won a silver medal. The Games were held from July 23 to August 2 with participation from nearly 3,000 athletes representing 74 countries and territories. The next Commonwealth Games will be hosted by India in Ahmedabad in 2030.

Imphal East Crowned Overall Champions at Governor's Cup Fencing Championship

Imphal, Aug. 3: Imphal East emerged as the overall champion at the 22nd Governor's Cup State-Level Fencing Championship held at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex. The district topped the medal tally with 25 gold, 21 silver and 32 bronze medals, finishing ahead of Imphal West, Chandel, Bishnupur and Ukhrul. A total of 273 fencers from eight districts competed in the championship. Winners received prizes during the closing ceremony attended by officials of the Manipur Olympic Association, Manipur Fencing Association and other dignitaries.

Kangpokpi Honours Footballers After International Youth Tournament Triumphs

Kangpokpi, Aug. 3: Three footballers from Kangpokpi who helped Minerva Football Academy win the Gothia Cup 2026 in Sweden and the Helsinki Cup 2026 in Finland were felicitated by Kangpokpi Christian Church. The players—Thangsanglen Kipgen, Lalvanghao Haokip and Seiminsang Khongsai—were honoured during a special programme attended by family members and well-wishers. The families praised Minerva Football Academy founder and coach Ranjit Bajaj for nurturing young footballers and contributing to India's success in international youth competitions. They also appealed to the Government of India to suitably recognise Bajaj for his contribution to Indian football.
