A team of ENT Surgeons of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal today successfully conducted surgery for Mucormycosis also known as " Black Fungus". The team comprising of Professor Th. Sudhiranjan, Dr O. Priyokumar and Dr N. Jiten successfully conducted the surgery for Mucormycosis involving the nose and paranasal sinuses in a post COVID patient.
The patient is undergoing treatment at RIMS Hospital under Professor Ch Dhanaraj. Anaesthetist team of the operation was led by Professor L Pradip and Dr. Eshori Longjam. During the surgery, mucormycosis was found to involve the right maxillary sinus, ethmoid sinuses, middle and inferior turbinates and posterior part of the nasal septum of the patient.
Sphenoid sinus was found to be oedematous but clear of gross disease. The lamina papyracea or the thin wall separating orbit and nasal cavity and floor of the brain was found to be intact in the patient. All parts affected by mucormycosis were cleared. Patient is reportedly stable after the surgery.
