Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan Visits Manipur

Imphal, September 8: Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan arrived in Imphal today as part of his four-day visit to the Northeast. He was received at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand and other dignitaries and was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour. The Vice-President later visited the INA Memorial Complex and War Museum at Moirang, where he paid tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and INA soldiers. At Sainik School Imphal, he paid homage at the War Memorial and interacted with cadets. Radhakrishnan stressed discipline, courage, leadership, integrity and patriotism, urging students to acquire knowledge of emerging technologies and contribute to building a developed and self-reliant India.

New Checkon Residents Stage Sit-In Over NRC

Imphal, September 8: Residents of New Checkon staged a sit-in protest supporting the Joint Forum for Delimitation’s demand for complete deferral of the Census in Manipur until the NRC is updated, with 1951 as the base year. The protest was jointly organised by the New Checkon Senior Citizen Society, New Checkon Meira Paibi and New Checkon Leikai Singlup at New Checkon Community Hall. JFD Convenor Jeetendra Ningomba reiterated that the agitation would continue until the demands are fulfilled. Senior citizen Longjam Nilamani, who participated in the protest, called on the government to prevent illegal immigrants from attacking indigenous people and urged authorities to ensure protection of the state’s native population.

Drivers Seek Urgent Repair of Tadubi-Kizema Bypass

Imphal, September 8: The Manipur Drivers’ Association has urged the government and concerned authorities to urgently repair the Tadubi-Kizema-Nagaland bypass, an important alternative route along National Highway-102. MDA Assistant General Secretary Kh. Sangeecharan said the bypass was made motorable last year following a major landslide near Phesama in Nagaland. The road, measuring around nine kilometres in Manipur and 18 kilometres in Nagaland, was restored through joint efforts of drivers’ and transporters’ associations from both states. Sangeecharan said the Manipur stretch is now in poor condition, affecting goods vehicle movement and contributing to rising prices of essential commodities. The Kizema Town Committee has also appealed for immediate repairs.

Contractors’ Forum Alleges Irregularities in PMGSY Tenders

Imphal, September 8: The Manipur Contractors’ Association Forum has alleged irregularities in the tendering process for works under PMGSY Phase-3 and urged the government to investigate. Forum Convenor Th. Somarendra alleged that two outside companies, Assam-based Baratia Infra Project Limited and Uttar Pradesh-based Nirbhay Construction, submitted erroneous or discrepant documents during technical evaluation. BIPL reportedly bid for 96 works, while Nirbhay Construction bid for 81. Somarendra alleged discrepancies in GST details, machinery information, laboratory equipment claims, proforma invoices and affidavits. The Forum has submitted a written complaint to the Secretary, RD & PR-cum-CEO, RED/MSRRDA, seeking re-evaluation, investigation and action against those responsible, while calling for a fair and transparent tender process.

Tongou Residents Seek Resumption of Rs 65-Crore Film City

Ukhrul, September 8: Residents of Tongou and members of the Tangkhul film industry have urged Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand to resume construction of the Rs 65-crore Film City project, which has remained stalled for more than six years. Tongou Headman Atem A. Shimrey said the foundation stone for the Centre for Culture and Moving Images was laid on February 4, 2020. He said Tongou has cultural significance, with more than 100 Tangkhul films produced since 1990. However, construction reportedly stopped after fencing work, with only around Rs 5 lakh spent. Local residents had donated 14 acres of land for the project. Despite the issue being raised in the Assembly and assurances given, construction has not resumed, prompting renewed appeals to the Chief Minister.

Allegation of Rs 1.41-Crore Shop Licence Fraud

Imphal, September 8: Twenty-two aggrieved individuals have alleged that three persons collected a total of Rs 1 crore 41 lakh 50 thousand by promising to allot shops and provide licences at Hao Keithel, Tombisana Market and Ngari Galli. At a press conference at Manipur Press Club, High Court advocate Dr S. Raghumani, representing the complainants, alleged that Naresh Moirangthem, Sorokhaibam Kumarjit and Nameirakpam Bhopen collected the money through UPI and other modes of payment. He said neither shops nor licences were provided. A legal notice was served on the three on July 11, demanding repayment with interest. Raghumani said the deadline had expired without repayment and urged authorities to initiate legal action over the allegations.

Sharda, Modhusudon Resign From Manipur Waqf Board

Imphal, September 8: Rajya Sabha MP A. Sharda and Koijam Modhusudon have resigned as members of the 8th Waqf Board, Manipur. According to a notice issued by Joint Secretary, Minority Affairs, Gangmei Ganguilu, the government has accepted their resignations from membership of the board. The development comes as the state’s Waqf Board continues its administrative functioning amid ongoing discussions concerning minority affairs and related institutional matters. The notice formally confirms acceptance of the resignations of both members.

All Eight Accused Arrested in Chongtham Vikram Murder Case

Delhi, September 8: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has said all eight accused in the alleged killing of Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram in Delhi have been arrested. Rijiju said he spoke with senior Delhi Police officials and that police had met the victim’s family. The body is expected to be brought to Manipur on Wednesday. Vikram, 55, was allegedly assaulted late Sunday night following an altercation over loud noise involving delivery workers and roadside restaurant workers. He died in hospital on Monday. Delhi Police has registered a murder case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and assured the family that a watertight chargesheet would be filed within two weeks. CCTV footage has reportedly been recovered as part of the investigation.

MPCC Demands Swift Justice for Vikram’s Death

Imphal, September 8: The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee has condemned the alleged killing of Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram in New Delhi and demanded swift justice. Addressing a press briefing at Congress Bhavan, MPCC Vice-President Hareshwar Goswami criticised the BJP-led government, alleging that increasing hate crimes and violence against people from the Northeast in major cities were linked to what he described as a polarising and partial approach. Goswami said Congress leaders including AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi and MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had condemned the incident. He said Rahul Gandhi had questioned the Union Home Minister and Delhi Police over crimes against Northeastern people, while Priyanka Gandhi described the incident as a shame for the nation.

Organisations Condemn Death of Guitarist Chongtham Vikram

Delhi, September 8: Several organisations, including DMCC, MSAD, MAIYOND, NESSDU, TKLD, NSUD, DCSU, PNTMD and the Chakma Community, have strongly condemned the death of Manipur’s pioneer rock guitarist Chongtham Vikram following an alleged assault in Delhi. The organisations called for a proper investigation and punishment for those responsible. Delhi Police has assured that the investigation will be conducted in the right direction and that the culprits will face appropriate punishment. Meanwhile, a large number of people gathered in Delhi for a candlelight vigil to mourn Vikram’s death and express solidarity with his bereaved family. The musician’s death has triggered widespread grief and condemnation among Manipuri organisations and community groups.

National People’s Women Front Condemns Vikram Killing

Imphal, September 8: The National People’s Women Front, Manipur, has condemned the alleged brutal killing of renowned guitarist Chongtham Vikram and demanded befitting punishment for all those responsible. In a statement, Front President Nonibala urged the authorities concerned to ensure appropriate punishment for the accused in the killing of the internationally acclaimed musician. She also expressed solidarity with and shared the grief of Vikram’s bereaved family. The Front’s statement comes amid widespread condemnation from political parties, civil society groups and Manipuri community organisations following the musician’s death in Delhi after an alleged assault.

Man Stabbed to Death in Thangal Bazar

Imphal West, September 8: A 46-year-old man was stabbed to death near Axis Bank at Thangal Bazar under City Police Station last evening. The deceased has been identified as Ankush Das, son of Bhabesh Chandra Das, originally from Borojalenga in Silchar, Assam, and currently residing in a rented house at the Bank of Baroda Building in Thangal Bazar. The incident reportedly occurred around 9:30 PM. City Police personnel rushed to the scene after receiving information and registered a case. Police have arrested two persons in connection with the murder—60-year-old Yendrembam Paona and 39-year-old Laishram Ngongo. Interrogation is underway to determine the motive, while efforts are being made to recover the weapon used in the crime.

Memorial Held for Two Victims of 2023 Pallel Violence

Kakching, September 8: A memorial observance was held at Pallel Maning Leikai Community Hall to remember Yengkhom Jiten of Kakching Chumnang Leikai and Soibam Nanao of Salungpham Maning Leikai, who were killed during the violence in the Pallel area on September 8, 2023. Family members and attendees paid floral tributes to their photographs during the observance. People who sustained injuries in the violence were also received at the programme. The memorial was jointly organised by the United Committee Pallel, Youth Volunteers Association Pallel, Social Development Organisation Pallel, Arambai Tenggol Unit 40-Pallel and Meira Paibi Apunba Lup Pallel.

CM Condoles Demise of Saikhom Kamlakanta Singha

Imphal, September 8: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has expressed grief over the demise of Saikhom Kamlakanta Singha, former president of the All Assam Manipuri Students Union and a social activist. The Chief Minister conveyed condolences over the passing of the former student leader and social worker. Kamlakanta Singha was associated with social activities and the Manipuri community movement in Assam.

Thoubal Police Seize Suspected SP Capsules, N-10 Tablets

Thoubal, September 8: Thoubal District Police arrested a 24-year-old man and recovered 1,008 suspected SP capsules, 100 N-10 tablets and Rs 17,180 in cash during an operation yesterday. The arrested person has been identified as Md. Rafijuddin, son of Md. Alimuddin of Kaleikhong Makha under Lilong Police Station in Thoubal district. The seizure forms part of ongoing enforcement efforts against the illegal trafficking and distribution of pharmaceutical drugs and other narcotic substances in the state. Police have taken the accused into custody for further investigation into the source and intended destination of the seized substances.

Seminar on Global Trade Workforce Development at Manipur University

Imphal, September 8: The Department of Foreign Languages, Manipur University, in association with the Korea International Trade Association, New Delhi, organised a one-day seminar on “Global Trade Workforce Development.” The programme brought together university officials, Korean language experts, trade representatives, industry representatives and students. KITA Trade Representative Yong Yoon highlighted Manipur’s strategic importance in terms of human resources and said the seminar aimed to promote human-resource exchange. IKETS Managing Director Kang Seung-jung stressed the need for grants and support for Korean-language students and expressed readiness to invest in human-resource development. Manipur University’s Department of Foreign Languages said the programme would expose students to skills and opportunities relevant to future recruitment.

Manipur University Observes International Literacy Day

Imphal, September 8: The Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension, Manipur University, observed the 60th International Literacy Day under the theme “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity.” As part of the programme, students conducted a 45-day literacy initiative for illiterate people at Mahabali Kabui Khul and Moirangkhom Kabui Khul and distributed certificates to participants. Manipur University In-charge Vice-Chancellor Professor R.K. Hemakumar said the ongoing conflict has created hardships but stressed that continued efforts to impart education can help society move forward. He said newly literate people can also contribute by educating others and children. A book containing field reports was also released during the observance.

World Literacy Day Observed at Kwakta

Bishnupur, September 8: Blooming Flower School, Kwakta Sevla, observed World Literacy Day with a programme jointly organised by the All Manipur Muslims (Meitei Pangal) Welfare Association and the All Meitei Pangal Youth Association. The event was held under themes focusing on the importance of literacy in building an educated, empowered and developed society, as well as empowering minds and transforming society. A quiz competition was also organised for students from different schools in Kwakta as part of the observance. The programme sought to highlight the importance of education and literacy in community development while encouraging students to participate in learning-oriented activities.

Free Physiotherapy Camp Held at Moirang Relief Camp

Bishnupur, September 8: A one-day free physiotherapy health camp focusing on stroke and cardiovascular disease was held at Okshongbung Upper Primary School, Moirang Relief Camp, as part of World Physical Therapy Day observance. The camp was jointly organised by the All Manipur Physiotherapy Association and Locomotion Healthcare Prosthetics & Orthotics Clinic, Top Mayai Leikai. Physiotherapists and doctors examined internally displaced persons, distributed free medicines and provided physiotherapy treatment to around 170 patients. Members of the All Manipur Physiotherapy Association also visited the Senior Citizens Home at Kumbi Terakhong in Bishnupur district, where they distributed medicines, food items and gifts to residents.

Assistance Extended to Villagers in Remote Chingai Areas

Ukhrul, September 8: The Chingai MLA Team Mission, formed under the initiative of MLA Khasim Vashum, extended assistance to residents of 12 remote villages in the constituency. The team visited Nungpi Khullen, Longpi Kajui, Kalhang, Kuirei, Ngahui, Marem, Namrei, Raza Khunou, Khatasom CV, Kharasom, Lazo and New Kharasom. After assessing villagers’ grievances, the team distributed old-age pension cards and government benefits to elderly residents and provided tin sheets, food items and medicines on behalf of the MLA. A spokesperson said the team’s objective of reaching every household in the interior areas has not yet been completed and that the outreach programme will continue.

Pingsanmei Villagers Back Nungba MLA

Noney, September 8: Residents of Pingsanmei, also known as Chingmei Kabui Village, have decided to support sitting Nungba MLA Dinganglung Gangmei, popularly known as Dipu Gangmei, in the upcoming 13th Manipur Legislative Assembly election. The decision was reportedly taken during a political convention held at Pungsanmai Village under Khoupum Sub-Division. Participants reviewed development works undertaken during the MLA’s tenure, including initiatives related to infrastructure development, governance, civic growth, direct outreach and socio-economic development of underprivileged sections. Following the deliberations, villagers expressed their support for Gangmei ahead of the forthcoming Assembly election.

Manipur Wins Three Medals in National Aquatic Championship

Indore, September 8: Manipur won one gold, one silver and one bronze medal at the ongoing 42nd Sub-Junior and 52nd Junior Boys and Girls National Aquatic Championship in Indore. In the Junior Boys Group 2 3-metre Spring Board event at the IDA International Swimming Pool, Arubam Benhar of Manipur secured gold with a score of 353.55, while teammate Hirom Bronson won silver with 304.88. In the Sub-Junior Boys Group 2 Synchronised Diving High Board event, Chakpram Tomthin claimed bronze with 195 points. The championship, being held under the Swimming Federation of India, will continue until September 12. RK Mehta is managing the Manipur team, with K. Jotin serving as coach.

Two Manipur Referees Clear National Powerlifting Exam

Ghazipur, September 8: Manipur’s Kirankumar Kangjam and Thangjam Leima Chanu have cleared the National Referee Category 2 examination in powerlifting. The examination was conducted during the 52nd Men’s and 44th Women’s Senior National Equipped Powerlifting Championship organised by Powerlifting India in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, from August 29 to September 3. Their successful completion of the examination has earned them certification in the National Referee Category 2 level. The achievement adds to Manipur’s representation in national-level officiating and is expected to contribute to the state’s growing involvement in powerlifting administration and competition.

Manipur Masters Aquatic Team to Compete in Haryana

Haryana, September 8: The Manipur Masters Aquatic Team will leave Imphal tomorrow to participate in the 22nd National Masters Aquatic Championship 2026, scheduled from September 11 to 13 at Champion Aquatics Academy in Haryana. A total of 32 players, comprising 30 men and two women, will represent Manipur at the national championship. The team will be led by Coach and Manager Lenin Hirom, with Ashish Kumar Joshi serving as Assistant Manager. The team’s participation will provide Manipur’s veteran swimmers an opportunity to compete at the national level and showcase their skills against athletes from across the country.

India Reach Junior Women’s Hockey Asia Cup Quarterfinals

Moqi City, September 8: India have secured a place in the quarterfinals of the Junior Women’s Hockey Asia Cup after defeating Japan 7-0 in their third league match. Purnima Yadav and Geeta Yadav scored two goals each, while Krishna Sharma, Supriya and Sanika Mane added one apiece. Manipur’s Khaidem Shileima Chanu is captaining the Indian team in the tournament. India are competing in the Elite Pool alongside South Korea, Japan, Malaysia and hosts China. The tournament will continue until September 13. India will play their final league match against hosts China tomorrow at 10:30 AM.
