Alliance Air Fare Disparity Raises Questions Over Imphal-Guwahati Connectivity

Imphal, September 5: A sharp difference in Alliance Air fares has raised concerns over air connectivity to conflict-hit Manipur. On September 8, the fare for Tezu-Guwahati was displayed at Rs 1,025, while the Imphal-Guwahati fare stood at Rs 7,606 on the same booking portal — a difference of Rs 6,581. The Tezu-Guwahati route is covered under the Centre’s UDAN regional connectivity scheme, while Imphal-Guwahati currently lacks similar fare protection. The issue is significant for Manipur, where disrupted highways and the absence of operational passenger rail connectivity make air travel important for medical, educational and emergency purposes. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand had earlier urged the Civil Aviation Ministry to include the route under UDAN.

JFD Reiterates Demand for NRC Updation with 1951 as Base Year

Imphal, September 5: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has reiterated its demand for updating the National Register of Citizens with 1951 as the base year. Speaking to the media at Soibam Leikai, JFD Convenor Jeetendra urged the Chief Minister and Home Minister to submit a memorandum to the Centre within September and make a public announcement on the demand. The organisation also sought a white paper on NRC and a Central Government gazette notification on the deferment of the Census to address public confusion. JFD further demanded reconstitution of the State Population Commission and an early State Population Policy to address what it described as prevailing demographic concerns.

DGP Reviews Security Arrangements in Ukhrul

Ukhrul, September 5: Manipur DGP Mukesh Singh visited Leplen, Sinakeithei and Litan areas of Ukhrul district to review prevailing security arrangements. During the visit, the DGP reportedly interacted with field commanders of Manipur Police, 6th Manipur Rifles, BSF and CRPF, besides meeting members of village authorities. Discussions focused on the prevailing security situation and arrangements in the areas. Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) also accompanied the DGP during the visit. The inspection comes amid continued efforts by security agencies to assess the situation in vulnerable areas and strengthen coordination between different forces operating in the district.

Families Question NIA Probe into Leilon Vaiphei Killings

Imphal, September 5: Families of the six Naga civilians killed at Leilon Vaiphei have expressed dissatisfaction with the National Investigation Agency’s probe into the case. According to the families, the investigation concluded that the Leilon Vaiphei village chief and an accused police constable were not involved in the killings. Winiliu Thiumai, wife of victim Dilip Thiumai, said her husband and five others were brutally killed after she was captured. She questioned the credibility of the ongoing investigation and said the families no longer have confidence in the NIA probe. The families have raised concerns over the findings and the manner in which the case is being investigated.

JTSA Announces Closure of NH-37 over Exam Centre Demand

Noney, September 5: The Joint Tribe Students’ Association (JTSA) has announced the closure of National Highway-37 from midnight in protest against the non-allocation of examination centres in Noney and Tamenglong districts. In a press statement, JTSA said the Rongmei Naga Council Manipur had appealed on August 24 for examination centres in the two districts, but alleged that the Social Welfare Department ignored the demand and allotted centres elsewhere. The association said candidates should not be forced to travel through Kuki-dominated areas given the prevailing situation. JTSA has urged the government to postpone the examination until centres are allotted in Noney and Tamenglong.

Woman Arrested with Suspected Drugs in Imphal East

Imphal, September 5: A woman was arrested during a cordon-and-search operation at Khabeisoi Maning Leikai in Imphal East district. The operation was conducted by Heingang Police Station and Imphal East Commandos. Security personnel arrested Nurbanu alias Rani after allegedly recovering suspected narcotic and psychotropic substances from her residence. The seized items included 400 Nitrapal-10 tablets, 59 small vials of suspected Heroin No. 4 and Rs 14,100 in cash. The arrest followed the search operation carried out by the security team as part of ongoing efforts to curb the circulation of illegal drugs in the district. Further legal proceedings are expected to follow.

Manipur Honours Seven Teachers on Teachers’ Day

Imphal, September 5: Manipur observed Teachers’ Day on September 5 with the State honouring seven outstanding teachers with the State Teacher Award 2026. Educational Awards were also presented to colleges for their achievements at a State-level programme held at the City Convention Centre in Palace Compound. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand highlighted the important role of teachers in shaping students and society, urging educators to treat students like members of their own families. Nambol L. Sanoi College received the Chief Minister’s Award for Educational Excellence, followed by Standard College and Liberal College. Commendation prizes were also given to several other colleges for their educational achievements.

Manipur Teacher Receives National Teachers’ Award 2026

Imphal, September 5: President Droupadi Murmu conferred the National Teachers’ Awards 2026 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on Teachers’ Day. Representing Manipur, Wanglembam Gobin of Laikon Upper Primary School, Kongba Makha Nandeibam, received the national honour. A total of 48 outstanding school teachers were recognised this year for their contribution to education, teaching innovation and positive impact on students. Overall, 82 teachers and educators were selected for awards across School Education, Higher Education and Skill Development sectors. NIELIT Signs MoUs with 13 Manipur Institutions

Imphal, September 5: The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) signed Memorandums of Understanding with 13 institutions from the health, education and industry sectors in Manipur to promote emerging technologies. The agreements were signed at NIELIT Akampat. NIELIT Director General Professor Madan Mohan Tripathi stressed the need to keep pace with rapid technological advancements and highlighted the growing impact of Artificial Intelligence on employment and the environment. He said AI Data Labs are currently operational at 28 of NIELIT’s 56 centres across India. Tripathi also encouraged students to take advantage of NIELIT initiatives, including 100 percent scholarships under the IEP Policy.

MTU Highlights Opportunities in AI, Cyber Security and Semiconductors

Imphal, September 5: Manipur Technical University Vice Chancellor Professor W. Chandbabu has highlighted the opportunities for MTU students through collaboration with NIELIT. Speaking at the MoU signing programme at NIELIT Akampat, he said training at NIELIT centres in Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security and Semiconductor-related subjects would greatly benefit students and support the University’s growth. Chandbabu said MTU has also signed agreements with institutions at national and international levels and is conducting faculty exchange programmes. He further stated that the University has entered into an agreement with a renowned institute in Taiwan in the field of semiconductors, opening up additional opportunities for academic and technical cooperation.

MP Sharda Lays Foundation Stone for Community Hall in Jiribam

Jiribam, September 5: Rajya Sabha MP A Sharda laid the foundation stone for a community hall under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) at Dibong Khunou in Jiribam district. The proposed facility is expected to provide residents with a common space for social, cultural and developmental programmes, as well as public meetings. The project is aimed at creating additional community infrastructure in the area and providing a venue for local activities. The foundation stone-laying marks the beginning of construction of the facility, which is expected to serve residents of Dibong Khunou and support various community-oriented programmes.

Heigrujam Rajeshwar Named Khundrakpam Candidate for 2027 Polls

Imphal, September 5: Awang Chingkhei Laipham Pana Yawol Lamjing Lup and the Khundrakpam Kendra Youth Committee have announced Heigrujam Rajeshwar as their candidate for the Khundrakpam Assembly Constituency in the 2027 Manipur elections. The announcement was made at a public meeting at Khundrakpam Makha Leikai Community Hall. Aching Lup President T. Bobo alleged that candidates from outside the constituency have used money power, while Khundrakpam remains underdeveloped. Rajeshwar said that if elected, he would work without corruption and seek to develop Khundrakpam as a Model Assembly Constituency, including through proper utilisation of the MLA Local Area Development Fund.

CRPF Holds 10-Km Mini-Marathon in Manipur

Imphal East, September 5: Various CRPF battalions and units organised a 10-kilometre mini-marathon under the Khelo India and SPANDAN initiatives for sports, peace and development. The race was jointly organised by the Sports Authority of India and the CRPF Nagaland and Manipur Sector. It was flagged off from the 69th CRPF Battalion and covered Koirengei Keithel before returning to the battalion. Around 160 civilian runners participated. CRPF Second-in-Command Pramod Chaudhuri said the event aimed to promote physical fitness and peace. DIG Manipur Police S. Goutam, retired DIG CRPF R. Duidang, Commandant S.A. Rojan Zimik and Padma Shri Guru Rewben Mashangva also participated.

Women Take Part in Khelo India Road Race in Imphal

Imphal, September 5: The 232 Mahila Battalion CRPF organised a 10-kilometre all-women road race under the Khelo India initiative. Padma Shri Oinam Bembem and Battalion Commanding Officer Syalu S. Maharana flagged off the race from Kangla Western Gate. Russia Chanu of Ngairangbam secured first place, followed by Sophiya Chanu of Balaramkhul and Th. Maria Chanu of Haoreibi. Medals and certificates were presented to winners and participants. Bembem expressed happiness over the achievements of Manipuri women in sports and encouraged more women to participate in sporting activities. She also urged participation in the upcoming Women’s Kabaddi Tournament at SAI Takyel on September 7 and 8.

She was speaking during a 10-kilometre road race organised by the 34th Battalion CRPF at Mayang Imphal under the theme “Run For Fitness, Run For Peace, Run For a Healthier Society.” Sarita and CRPF Second-in-Command Ravindra Singh Tomar flagged off the race, which saw around 150 runners participate. Mutum Mukta secured first place, followed by Md. Jamir Khan and Wahengbam Rishikanta. Cash prizes and certificates were presented to the winners. Sarita stressed the importance of healthy lifestyles and sports for young people.

Over 200 Participate in CRPF Marathon in Jiribam

Jiribam, September 5: The 156th Battalion CRPF organised a 10-kilometre marathon in Jiribam under the theme “Run for Peace and Development.” The race began at Irawat Complex and concluded at Jiribam Railway Station, covering the DC Office Complex route. Around 212 participants from different villages across Jiribam district took part. Prizes were distributed to the winners following the race. The event was attended by the Jiribam ADC, Additional SP, SDO, CRPF commanding officers and DIG CRPF Vishnu Goutam. The marathon was organised as part of efforts to encourage physical fitness, community participation and peaceful engagement through sports.

Manipur Drivers Association Extends Aid to Stroke-Affected Driver

Imphal, September 5: The Manipur Drivers Association provided financial assistance to driver Makakmayum Rahimuddin alias Amubi of Kairang Tera Makhong, who is currently unable to work after suffering two BP strokes. A team led by MDA President Saikhom Babudhon handed over the assistance to Rahimuddin and his family. Manipur State Kala Akademi Condoles Artist Thoidingjam Tombi

Imphal, September 5: The Manipur State Kala Akademi has condoled the demise of eminent Manipuri visual artist Thoidingjam Tombi. In a statement, Akademi Secretary Sunanda Thokchom described Tombi as a celebrated practitioner of visual arts whose contribution was recognised with several honours, including the National Lalit Kala Akademi Award in 1988. The Akademi said his passing represents a major loss to the visual arts community of Manipur. The institution expressed condolences to his family, friends and admirers and acknowledged his contribution to the State’s artistic heritage.

UN General Assembly Backs Resolution on More Accurate World Map

Lagos, September 5: The United Nations General Assembly has reportedly voted in favour of replacing the traditional world map with a representation that more accurately reflects the size of Africa. According to media reports, the “Correct the Map” resolution, sponsored by Togo and supported by African Union members, received backing from 164 countries, including India, France and the United Kingdom. The United States reportedly voted against the resolution, while six countries abstained. The non-binding resolution is expected to encourage institutions to reconsider maps based on the Mercator projection, which has long been criticised for distorting the relative size of landmasses.

IMD Forecasts Rainfall Across Manipur, Yellow Warning Issued

Imphal, September 5: The India Meteorological Department’s Imphal centre has forecast rainfall across Manipur over the next two days, with a yellow warning for heavy rainfall in several areas. Heavy rain is likely in Senapati, Ukhrul, Kamjong, Tengnoupal and Pherzawl districts, while rainfall is also expected in other parts of the State. Showers are likely across most areas of Manipur on September 6. Meanwhile, the ICAR Agrometeorological Unit at Lamphelpat recorded a maximum temperature of 29.6 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 23 degrees Celsius. Residents in areas under the warning have been advised to remain alert to weather-related developments.

Two Manipuri Athletes Selected for Asian Games Wushu Team

Imphal, September 5: Manipur athletes Mayanglambam Suraj and Hanjabam Langlentombi will represent India in Wushu at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, scheduled from September 19 to October 4. Suraj will compete in the men’s Changquan event, while Langlentombi will participate in Nanquan and Nandao. Suraj had won a silver medal in Senior Gunshu and a bronze in Senior Daoshu at the Moscow Wushu Stars Championship 2025. Langlentombi created history by becoming the first female athlete to win a silver medal in Nanquan at the 1st Asian Taolu Cup in 2025. Their selection adds to Manipur’s representation at the continental sporting event.

State Government Working to Improve Facilities for Para Athletes

Imphal, September 5: Youth Affairs and Sports Director M. Veto said the State Government is working to provide para athletes with equal opportunities and facilities comparable to those available to Olympic gold medallists. He was speaking at the inaugural programme of a 30-day Residential Wheelchair Basketball Coaching Camp 2026 organised by the Wheelchair Basketball Association, Manipur, at CYCL Club, Singjamei Chingamathak. Veto said the Sports Policy 2026 Draft has been completed and efforts are underway to improve different para-sports disciplines in the State. The camp is expected to strengthen wheelchair basketball skills while providing athletes with structured coaching and competitive preparation.

Manipur Junior Girls Football Team Receives Kits Ahead of National Championship

Imphal, September 5: Football uniforms were presented to the Manipur team representing the State at the Dr. Talimeran Ao Junior Girls National Football Championship. The programme was held at Lamlong Thongkhong Artificial Turf in the presence of officials and sponsors. The championship will be held in Anantapur, Madhya Pradesh, from September 10 to 25 under the All India Football Federation, with 15 teams competing in four groups. Manipur’s 20-member squad includes two goalkeepers, seven defenders, eight midfielders and three forwards. The team will leave on September 7 and face Chhattisgarh on September 10, Uttar Pradesh on September 12 and Kerala on September 14 in Group A.

India Defeats South Korea 4-1 in Junior Women’s Hockey Asia Cup

Imphal, September 5: The Indian Junior Women’s Hockey team began its campaign in the Junior Women’s Hockey Asia Cup in impressive fashion, defeating South Korea 4-1 in its opening league match at Moqi City, China. The tournament is being organised under the Asian Hockey Federation. India’s team is captained by Manipuri hockey player Khaidem Shileima Chanu. The victory gives India a strong start in the competition as the team looks ahead to its second league fixture. India will face Malaysia in its next match on September 6 at 6:30 pm. The tournament features some of Asia’s leading junior women’s hockey teams competing for continental honours.
