State to Explore Incentives for Conservators of Puya and Korbek Manuscripts

Imphal, September 15: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand said the State Cabinet will explore the possibility of providing incentives to individuals who preserve ancient Puya and Korbek manuscripts. He was speaking at the inauguration of the 44th Archives Week and Records Exhibition at the State Archives, Keishampat, today. The Chief Minister also inaugurated new Puya Reading Rooms and a Stack Room Building at the complex. He said the manuscripts contain valuable knowledge on architecture, social order, royal lineages and medicine and represent an important legacy of Manipur. Khemchand also appreciated the Department of Art and Culture for introducing Puya Reading Classrooms and felicitated donors of Puya and Korbek manuscripts.

Government Reiterates Support for Preservation of Puya and Korbek Manuscripts

Imphal, September 15: Art and Culture Minister Dr. Kh. Loken said the government is continuously working to preserve and promote Manipur’s cultural heritage. Speaking at the 44th Archives Week and Records Exhibition at the State Archives, Keishampat, today, Loken reiterated that the government would provide incentives to individuals actively involved in preserving and maintaining ancient Puya and Korbek manuscripts. He said such efforts are important for protecting the state’s historical and cultural legacy for future generations. The Minister’s remarks came after Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand announced that the State Cabinet would examine the possibility of introducing incentives for manuscript conservators.

LDA Launches Official Website, Releases Loktak Waterbird Census Report

Imphal, September 15: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand today launched the official website of the Loktak Development Authority, LDA, and released the Waterbird Census Report – Loktak Ramsar 2026 at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Imphal. The new website is intended to provide information on Loktak Lake, conservation programmes, projects and activities undertaken by the LDA, while promoting transparency and public participation. The Waterbird Census Report contains data on the population and diversity of waterbirds recorded in and around Loktak Lake. The findings are expected to support biodiversity conservation, habitat management and monitoring of the Ramsar site.

Sugnu MLA Calls for Leadership Focused on Unity and Public Welfare

Kakching, September 15: Sugnu MLA Kangujam Ranjit described the prevailing situation in Manipur as one of the most difficult and distressing periods in the state’s history. He was speaking at a felicitation programme organised in his honour by Waikhong Ningthoumanai Congress Mahila and workers, the Development Committee Waikhong and Youth Front Waikhong. The programme was held under the theme “Voice of the Voiceless” at Ima Thumkhong Lairembi Harao Sanglen, Waikhong Keithel. Ranjit said good leadership should bring people together and guide the state through its present difficulties. He alleged that the BJP-led government has failed to address the hardships faced by people affected by the ongoing crisis.

JFD Volunteers Shut Government Offices Over NRC Demand

Imphal, September 15: Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation, JFD, volunteers today shut down several government offices across Imphal, demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens, NRC, in Manipur with 1951 as the base year. The offices included the Manipur State Rural Road Development Agency at North AOC, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Office, Range Forest Office at Irilbung, and SDC offices at Bashikhong and Lilong Chajing. Volunteers asked employees to leave the offices from around 1 PM. Members of NIMACCC also shut several government offices, including the SDC Office at Sekmai and Horticulture Office at Khongampat. Posters opposing Census without NRC updation were also displayed.

JFD Rejects Government’s Claim That Agitation Is Causing Public Inconvenience

Imphal, September 15: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation, JFD, has rejected Government Spokesperson and MLA Th. Radheshyam’s statement that the “No Census until NRC update” agitation is causing inconvenience to the public. Speaking to the media at the JFD camp at Soibam Leikai today, Convenor Jitendra Ningomba questioned the government’s claim that the Census was deferred based on public demand. He said the amended Gazette notification issued by the Registrar General of India on September 5 only postpones House Listing in Manipur until further notification. Ningomba said the notification does not state that the Census will be conducted only after NRC updation or identification of illegal immigrants. He also demanded that the government make public its letter to the Centre.

All-Party Delegation, 14 CSOs Seek Early NRC Updation

Imphal, September 15: An all-party delegation and representatives of 14 civil society organisations met Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand at the CM’s Cabinet Hall at the New Secretariat in Mantripukhri yesterday, demanding early updation of the NRC in Manipur with 1951 as the base year. Representatives of ruling and opposition parties, including the Congress, BJP, Forward Bloc, AAP, NPP, RPI, NCP and CPI, attended the meeting along with CSO representatives from different communities. Fourteen CSOs Convenor Shanta Nahakpam said the meeting called for strengthening the existing Assembly resolution and issuing a Gazette notification affirming NRC updation in Manipur. He said a delegation would submit the demand to Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his proposed visit to Manipur in October.

Five CSOs Hold Protest Seeking NRC Updation

Imphal, September 15: Five civil society organisations, AMUCO, AMAWOVA, PLMPAM, COHR and MSF, staged a protest meeting at Kwakeithel Thounaojam Leikai Community Hall today, demanding early updation of the NRC in Manipur with 1951 as the base year. The organisations called on the State Government to take up the matter with the Centre and opposed the implementation of SIR 2026, citing concerns over the inclusion of illegal immigrants. They also demanded the return of internally displaced persons to their original homes and repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958, from Manipur. AMUCO Vice-President Kshetrimayum Rajen Meitei welcomed the government’s efforts on NRC but called for stronger action.

Students Protest for NRC Updation and Deferral of Census

Imphal, September 15: Students of Ananda Higher Secondary School, Nongmeibung, staged a protest today demanding complete deferral of the Census and updation of the NRC in Manipur with 1951 as the base year. The protest was organised under the banner of the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation, JFD, Students Wing. A member of the JFD Students Wing alleged that although legislators had expressed support for NRC updation during the recent Assembly session, no follow-up action had been taken. The student body described the situation as an attempt to suppress the public voice and reiterated its demand for measures to identify illegal immigrants through the NRC process.

UNNACCO College Students Stage Protest Over NRC Demand

Imphal, September 15: Students of UNNACCO College staged a protest inside the college campus today, demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens, NRC, in Manipur with 1951 as the base year. The protest was organised under the banner of the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation, JFD. The students reiterated the demand for an NRC exercise aimed at identifying illegal immigrants and safeguarding the interests of the indigenous population. School Community Protests Alleged Theft of Properties at Lamphel High School

Imphal, September 15: Teachers, students, members of the Women Development Committee and Meira Paibi groups of Top Khongnang Makhong staged a sit-in at Lamphel High School today, protesting the alleged theft of school properties by unknown persons. Teacher Huidrom Manglem said thefts from the school campus were not an isolated incident and alleged that several properties had been stolen previously. He urged the authorities to take swift action to prevent further incidents. Women Development Committee President Ksh. Santibala said Meira Paibi members and local residents would maintain vigil around the school campus. She also demanded that those responsible for the alleged thefts be arrested.

PMAY 2.0 Beneficiaries to Receive Housing Assistance of Rs. 2.5 Lakh

Imphal, September 15: MAHUD Joint Director M. Kapajit said eligible beneficiaries can apply for housing assistance under PMAY 2.0 through their respective Urban Local Bodies. Speaking at a Meet the Press programme organised by DIPR at Keishampat today, Kapajit said each beneficiary will receive Rs. 2.5 lakh, with 90 percent of the funding provided by the Centre and 10 percent by the State. The assistance will be released in three instalments of Rs. 1 lakh, Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 50,000. So far, 9,427 beneficiaries have been approved, with 1,787 houses under construction and the first instalment released to 1,268 beneficiaries.

IMC Faces Manpower Shortage, Says Commissioner

Imphal, September 15: Imphal Municipal Corporation Commissioner M. Nando said the corporation faces challenges in developing Imphal city due to manpower shortages and prevailing conditions in the city. Speaking at a Meet the Press programme organised by DIPR at Keishampat today, Nando said 180 of the 236 sanctioned posts in the corporation are vacant. He said existing staff are nevertheless continuing to carry out works related to MAHUD. Nando also said the new building bye-laws have been enforced in Imphal since December 2025. He appealed to the public to comply with the regulations and warned that violations would attract penalties.

Arms and Ammunition Recovered During Search Operation in Noney

Noney, September 15: A combined team of Khongsang Police and CRPF CoBRA recovered arms and ammunition during a search operation at Taobam Irang village in Noney district yesterday. According to the report, the security team recovered one single-barrel gun, nine live rounds and two Baofeng wireless sets along with a charger. The operation was conducted as part of ongoing security measures in the area. The recovered weapons and ammunition have been taken into custody for further investigation. Security agencies are continuing operations to detect and recover illegal arms and ammunition in vulnerable areas of the state.

Man Arrested With Weapons and Ammunition in Wangoo

Kakching, September 15: A combined team of Kakching Police Commando and 46 Assam Rifles arrested a man with weapons and ammunition during a search operation in the Wangoo Nongyaikhong area under Wangoo Police Station yesterday. The arrested person has been identified as 25-year-old Sorokhaibam Rakesh, son of late S. Shamu, of the same locality. Security forces recovered one INSAS rifle, one .303 rifle, four magazines, 116 rounds of ammunition of different calibres, 31 empty 12-bore cartridge cases and 750 grams of gunpowder. The arrested person and recovered items have been handed over to the concerned authorities for further legal proceedings.

Man Arrested With 29 Grams of Heroin in Imphal East

Imphal, September 15: Heingang Police arrested a man with 29 grams of Heroin No. 4 from a rented house near Mantripukhri Mandir yesterday. According to police, the arrested person has been identified as 31-year-old Abdul Rahaman, son of Fazur Rahaman, from Borayangbi Ward Number 3 in Bishnupur district. The suspected heroin was recovered during a police operation based on information regarding the presence of the contraband. The accused has been taken into custody and further investigation is underway to establish the source of the drug and determine whether others were involved. Legal proceedings will follow under applicable narcotics laws.

Male Body Recovered Near Khurai Kongpal

Imphal, September 15: Police recovered the body of an unidentified man from near Khurai Kongpal Laishram Leikai Awang Ring Road under Porompat Police Station this afternoon. According to reports, a passerby noticed the body around noon and informed the authorities. A team of Porompat Police, along with forensic personnel, reached the spot and examined the scene. The body has been kept at the JNIMS morgue for identification. Porompat Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. Authorities are working to establish the identity of the deceased and determine the cause of death.

Governor Presents Governor’s Award 2026 to Class 11 Student

Imphal, September 15: Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla today presented the Governor’s Award 2026 to Sushitra Ningthemchamayum, a Class 11 Science student of RK Sanatombi Devi Vidyalaya. The award was presented during a function organised by Rajkumari Sanatombi Devi Educational Institutions-Manipur at Asha Jina Complex, North AOC. Ten individuals were also honoured with Rajkumari Sanatombi Devi Awards 2026 for excellence in teaching, nursing, sports, the differently abled category and co-curricular activities and sports among CBSE school students. The awards carry cash prizes, certificates and mementoes. Governor Bhalla said the awards recognise excellence, dedication and service and encouraged students to participate in sports and co-curricular activities to develop confidence, teamwork and leadership.

Manipur State Commission for Women Marks 20th Foundation Day

Imphal, September 15: The Manipur State Commission for Women, MSCW, observed its 20th Foundation Day at Imperial Hall, Classic Grande, Chingmeirong, today. MSCW Chairperson Th. Tiningpham Monsang said the Commission remains committed to protecting the rights and welfare of women with public support. Social Welfare Commissioner Haobam Rosita highlighted the Commission’s role in safeguarding women’s constitutional and legal rights and addressing their grievances. She also welcomed the upcoming online portal through which women, particularly those seeking confidentiality or living in remote areas, can submit complaints. MSCW Member Secretary W. Phajatombi said the Commission, established on September 15, 2006, has visited all 16 districts. The programme also featured the release of “Voice of Women, Vol. 7.”

Dictionary of Flowering Plants of Manipur Released

Thoubal, September 15: The first volume of “Dictionary of Flowering Plants of Manipur,” co-authored by Professor Hanjabam Manoranjan Sharma and Professor Anoubam Radhapyari, was released today. The programme was organised by the College Research Forum. The dictionary documents the names and properties of flowering plants found in Manipur. DM University Imphal Vice-Chancellor in-charge Professor W. Chandbabu, who attended as chief guest, said the publication would be useful for students and younger generations. He also suggested that pictures of plant specimens be included in future editions. College Teachers’ Association President Waikhom Sobhapati and State AYUSH Director Dr. Akoijam Lokendro were among those present.

Six-Year-Old Girl Rescued After Finger Gets Stuck in Metal Bracket

Imphal, September 15: A six-year-old girl was successfully rescued by the medical team at Shija Hospital after one of her fingers became stuck in a metal lock bracket. When she was brought to the hospital, the affected finger was swollen and had turned whitish, indicating restricted blood circulation. The medical team used specialised instruments to carefully remove the metal bracket without causing further injury. Following the procedure, blood circulation was restored and the girl’s finger returned to normal condition. The case highlights the importance of timely medical intervention in situations involving restricted blood circulation and accidental entrapment of body parts.

NEPO Manipur Chapter Holds Condolence Meeting for Saikhom Kamlakanta

Imphal, September 15: A condolence meeting was held at Manipur Press Club today to mourn the demise of former All Assam Manipuri Students’ Union President Saikhom Kamlakanta, who passed away on September 7. The programme was organised by the Manipur Chapter of the North East People’s Organisation, NEPO. Speaking on the occasion, former Audit General of the All Manipur Students Coordinating Committee K. Saratkumar described Kamlakanta as a selfless leader who worked for the welfare of Manipuris, particularly Meeteis living outside the state. Participants paid floral tributes and observed a two-minute silence in memory of the late leader.

‘Chiru Maroi’ Recognised as Novel Variety After Eight Years of Research

Kangpokpi, September 15: Manipur’s indigenous bunching onion variety “Chiru Maroi” has been scientifically recognised as a novel variety following eight years of research. The study was conducted by Dr. P.S. Mariam Anal, Assistant Professor of Horticulture at Central Agricultural University, and Dr. Anil Khar, Principal Scientist and Head of ICAR-IARI Regional Station, Pune. The onion has been identified scientifically as “Allium fistulosum var. Chiru maroi – a novel variety.” The findings were published in the internationally recognised journal Phytotaxa on September 9. Chiru Maroi is traditionally cultivated by the Chiru community in Bungte Chiru and Nungshai Chiru villages of Kangpokpi district.

CM Prays for Peace and Normalcy at Ganesh Puja Ceremony

Imphal, September 15: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand offered prayers to Lord Ganesh for peace and normalcy in Manipur during the five-day Sri Sri Ganesh Puja Ceremony at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen in the Palace Compound today. Speaking at the inaugural function, the Chief Minister appealed for an end to violence and urged people from all communities to live in harmony and work collectively towards peace and development. Sri Sri Ganesh Puja Committee Manipur President Dr. Thangjam Dhabali also appealed to people to give up animosity and selfishness and work towards harmonious coexistence. Several MLAs and Rajya Sabha MP A. Sarda attended the ceremony.

YMDO Heirangoithong Wins Khelo India SPANDAN Volleyball Tournament

Imphal, September 15: YMDO Heirangoithong defeated AMIM YDO Mayang Imphal to win a volleyball tournament organised by 34 Battalion CRPF, Langol Zone-3, under the Khelo India SPANDAN Scheme. The final was played at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex today, with YMDO Heirangoithong winning 25-18, 24-26, 25-21 and 25-17. MIKHYA Mayang Imphal secured third place after defeating UNT Top Siphai 25-21, 25-20 and 25-22. Arjuna Awardee and Padma Shri awardee N. Kunjarani attended the closing ceremony and distributed prizes. She said such tournaments encourage youth participation in sports, promote fitness and help keep young people away from drug abuse.

Senapati District Football League Begins

Senapati, September 15: The 1st Division District Football League 2026 kicked off at Senapati Astro Turf Ground today. The league is being jointly organised by the District Sports Association and Senapati District Olympic Association, Manipur. DRDA Assistant Engineer Kamei Manganchao attended the inaugural ceremony as the special guest. FC Fulloh and Athletico D Karong played the opening match, while Khongdei Circle FC faced Koziirii FC in the second match. A total of eight football teams are participating in the district league. The tournament is expected to provide a competitive platform for local footballers and promote the development of football in Senapati district.

Gopaldev Old Yaiskul Advance After Walkover in Players Trophy Kang Tournament

Imphal, September 15: Gopaldev Old Yaiskul Kangkhut received a walkover in the third league match of the 19th Players Trophy League-cum-Knock Out Kang Tournament at Shree Shree Ram Gopaldev Mandop Kangshang, Yaiskul Chingakham Leirak. Gopaldev Old Yaiskul were awarded the match after KKCO Keishamthong Kangkhut failed to field the required number of players to continue the match into the second half. As per tournament rules, KKCO Keishamthong Kangkhut has also been disqualified from participating further in the tournament. The result allows Gopaldev Old Yaiskul Kangkhut to progress in the ongoing competition.
