Couple Killed, Six-Year-Old Son Injured in Kaimai Attack

Tamenglong, September 13: A couple was killed and their six-year-old son injured after unidentified armed persons allegedly attacked their home at L. Tollen Kuki village under Kaimai Police Station in Tamenglong district early this morning. According to reports received by Impact News, the incident occurred around 4 AM while the family was asleep. The assailants reportedly entered the house and opened fire. The deceased have been identified as Lhingzangai and her husband Seineh Singsit. Seineh Singsit succumbed to his injuries at Silchar Medical College this afternoon, while their son sustained bullet injuries. Security forces have rushed to the area and launched search operations. No arrests have been reported. There has been no official confirmation regarding the identity of the perpetrators.

Kaimai Naga Village Authority Condemns L. Tollen Attack

Tamenglong, September 13: The Kaimai Naga Village Authority of Tousem Sub-Division has condemned the attack on L. Tollen Kuki village in Tamenglong district today. In a condemnation letter, the village authority described the incident as an apparent attempt to create disharmony and division between communities that have lived peacefully together. It appealed to the authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation and bring those responsible to justice. The village authority also urged all communities to exercise restraint and prevent rumours from escalating tensions in the area. The condemnation comes after an armed attack on a family at L. Tollen earlier today that left a couple dead and their six-year-old son injured.

L. Tollen Village Authority Alleges NSCN-IM and ZUF-K Involvement

Tamenglong, September 13: L. Tollen Village Authority Chief and Chairman Lamkholun Haokip has alleged that the attack on the village, which killed two civilians, was carried out by NSCN-IM and ZUF-K. In a press release, Haokip said the incident had reopened memories of the 1993 ethnic violence against the Kuki community. He alleged that the wounds from the earlier violence remain fresh and that the latest attack has revived those memories. The village authority demanded that the Government of India and the Manipur Government provide Central security forces for the protection of Kuki villagers. It also called for action against those responsible for the attack. The allegations have not been independently verified.

Government Says NRC Updation Process Underway

Imphal, September 13: Manipur Government Spokesperson Thokchom Radheshyam said the government is committed to updating the National Register of Citizens, or NRC, in Manipur and appealed to the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation, JFD, to withdraw its agitation. Speaking to the media at the Chief Minister’s Bungalow today, Radheshyam said a team of legislators led by Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam is camping in Delhi to press Central leaders on the issue. He said the state government has already written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking NRC updation with 1951 as the base year and is awaiting Centre’s approval. He added that the Census exercise has been deferred in Manipur following public demand. Radheshyam said the agitation is causing hardship to the public.

Five Organisations Criticise Centre Over Manipur Issues

Imphal, September 13: Five organisations, including AMUCO, AMAWOVA, PLMPAM, COHR and MSF, have criticised the BJP-led Central Government over what they described as multiple issues affecting Manipur. The organisations held a public meeting at Kwakeithel Thounaojam Leikai Community Hall and raised several demands, including protection of Manipur’s territorial integrity, NRC updation with 1951 as the base year, opposition to SIR 2026, rehabilitation of internally displaced persons in their original homes and withdrawal of AFSPA from the state. Convenor Sorokhaibam Sanjay alleged that the Centre has kept Manipur in turmoil and questioned the conduct of the Census while thousands remain displaced. The organisations warned of various forms of agitation if their demands are not addressed.

Samajwadi Party MP Criticises Centre’s Handling of Manipur Crisis

Imphal, September 13: Samajwadi Party Lok Sabha MP Rajeev Rai has criticised the BJP-led government over its handling of the prolonged crisis in Manipur, alleging that the Centre has followed a “Divide and Rule” policy. He was speaking at the inauguration of the Samajwadi Party Manipur State Office at Tera Lukram Leirak today. Rai, who is on a two-day visit to Manipur, expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of adequate discussion on the crisis in Parliament. He questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the situation and highlighted the continuing violence and displacement in the state. During his visit, Rai also met families of six Naga individuals killed in violence and visited internally displaced persons at Akampat Relief Camp.

NIPCO Marks 26th Foundation Day, Calls for Early NRC Updation

Imphal, September 13: The National Identity Protection Council, NIPCO, observed its 26th Foundation Day at Lamyanba Shanglen in the Palace Compound, Imphal, today. Speaking on the occasion, NIPCO President Oinam Premjit said the public demand for updating the NRC in Manipur is aimed at safeguarding the state’s future welfare and should not be viewed as a challenge to the government’s authority. He attributed the prolonged conflict in the state to failures of both the State and Central governments and urged authorities to understand public sentiment and resolve the crisis. Premjit also called for the early return of internally displaced persons to their homes and demanded NRC updation to identify genuine Indian citizens and illegal immigrants. Leaders of various civil society organisations attended the programme.

DM University Hunger Strike Enters Fifth Day

Imphal, September 13: The indefinite hunger strike by five research scholars of DM University demanding release of their pending stipends entered its fifth day today. Speaking at a press conference outside the university’s Administrative Block, DMU-SU Research Representative Sanasam Lamdaiba said the health condition of some of the hunger strikers has deteriorated, with some requiring hospitalisation. He expressed disappointment over the government’s alleged lack of appropriate action. Lamdaiba said the DMU Students’ Union and research scholars have decided to shut down five colleges under the university from tomorrow as part of the agitation. The institutions include DM College of Science, DM College of Arts, DM College of Commerce, GP Women’s College and LMS Law College. The hunger strike will continue until the pending stipends are released.

Langthabal MLA Highlights Development and Welfare Initiatives

Imphal, September 13: Langthabal MLA Karam Shyam criticised allegations that the BJP was responsible for Manipur’s ethnic crisis and said resolving the conflict is the responsibility of the government. He was speaking at a political discussion for women from eight polling stations of Langthabal Assembly Constituency at Chajing Mairenkhong Community Hall today. Shyam said elected representatives have a responsibility to serve every individual in their constituencies. He highlighted development works undertaken during his tenure, including road infrastructure and local development projects. The MLA also spoke about initiatives aimed at improving the livelihoods of unemployed youth. He said half of his monthly MLA salary is provided to families facing severe economic hardship, while educational assistance is extended to children of widows.

Petroleum Drivers Call Off Steering-Down Agitation

Imphal, September 13: The steering-down agitation launched by petroleum product drivers has been called off following assurances from Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand, according to the Petroleum Product Drivers Association. In a statement, the association also welcomed the assurance of monetary compensation for drivers injured in the stone-pelting incident linked to the economic blockade at Noney. Following the withdrawal of the agitation, loading of petrol and diesel at the Malom Depot and LPG gas at the Sekmai Bottling Plant has resumed. However, the association said petroleum tankers and LPG bullet transporters would not participate in empty convoy movements until a meeting with stakeholders and the Chief Minister scheduled for September 15.

Transporters and Drivers Council Extends Financial Aid to Affected Drivers

Imphal, September 13: The Transporter and Drivers Council, TDC, extended financial assistance to drivers whose vehicles were damaged along National Highway-37 between Imphal and Jiribam during the economic blockade on September 10. The assistance was handed over to the affected drivers at a programme held at Langjing Achouba Truck Parking today. TDC President H. Ranjit provided Rs. 15,000 each to truck drivers S. Ngouba and Romio, while Rs. 7,500 each was provided to drivers Biren and Somorjit. Ranjit said drivers play an important role in transporting goods and essential commodities and noted that several drivers and handymen have lost their lives on state highways. He appealed to bandh and blockade supporters not to target drivers and urged caution while travelling on hilly roads.

TDC Urges Officials to Treat Drivers Respectfully

Imphal, September 13: Transporter and Drivers Council President H. Ranjit has alleged that drivers transporting rice and other essential commodities for government departments have faced repeated mistreatment by officials of CAF and PD and FCI. Speaking during a programme organised by the TDC, Ranjit urged department officials to refrain from such alleged misconduct towards drivers. He stressed the important role played by drivers in transporting essential commodities and maintaining supply chains across the state. The TDC has also been raising concerns over the safety and working conditions of drivers travelling along Manipur’s highways. The council called for better coordination between drivers and government departments to ensure smooth transportation of essential goods.

Former Patsoi MLA Inspects Long-Pending Water Supply Projects

Imphal, September 13: Former Patsoi Assembly Constituency MLA AK Mirabai today inspected six ongoing water supply schemes in the constituency, which were taken up more than a decade ago under the New Development Bank at a combined cost of over Rs. 18 crore. During the inspection, Mirabai alleged that delays in completing the schemes have caused hardship to residents due to inadequate drinking water supply. She said strict action should be initiated against the concerned agency if contractor Vishnu Prakash R. Punglia Limited fails to complete the works and ensure water supply within one month. The schemes include projects at Tabungkhok Makha Leikai, Changangei, Patsoi Part-2, Tabungkhok, Patsoi Part-4 and Patsoi Part-2 Maning Leikai.

Former Wabagai MLA Says Congress Can Restore Lasting Peace

Kakching, September 13: Former Wabagai Assembly Constituency MLA and MPCC Treasurer Md Fajur Rahim has said lasting peace can be restored in Manipur and India only when the Congress comes to power. He was speaking at a one-day political conference organised by the Wabagai Block Congress Committee at Irong Chesaba today. Fajur Rahim said the people of Manipur have continued to suffer since the outbreak of communal violence on May 3, 2023. He criticised the BJP-led “double-engine” government, alleging that it has failed to resolve the crisis. Rahim said Congress is committed to treating all sections of society equally and called for political efforts aimed at restoring peace and normalcy in the state.

Bird-Trapping Nets Destroyed in Mayang Imphal

Imphal, September 13: The Joint Co-ordination Committee on Wildlife and Biodiversity, JCCWB Manipur, destroyed bird-trapping nets at water bodies in Mayang Imphal Khamenbi, Imphal West, today. The drive was conducted by a JCCWB team led by Active Member Shrinibash Waikhom along with staff of the Mayang Imphal Forest Beat Office. According to JCCWB Convenor Romesh Ningthoujam, the action followed reports of bird trapping using nets and the alleged use of firearms for hunting birds in water bodies under the Mayang Imphal Forest Beat. The organisation appealed to people to stop poaching and warned that hunting birds is punishable under the Wildlife Protection Act.

23 Organisations Condemn Killing of Musician Chongtham Vikram

Imphal, September 13: Twenty-three organisations of Manipur have condemned the killing of renowned guitarist Chongtham Vikram in Delhi. In a joint statement, the organisations said artistes and sportspersons from Manipur have consistently brought laurels to India at the international level. They expressed concern over what they described as continued discrimination and contempt faced by people of Mongoloid origin from the northeastern states in mainland India. The organisations condemned Vikram’s death and called attention to the concerns surrounding the treatment of people from the Northeast. The statement comes amid widespread demands for justice following the death of the Manipuri musician in Delhi.

Five Arrested With Over 21 Kg Suspected Cannabis in Imphal

Imphal, September 13: Five persons were arrested after a combined team seized approximately 21.46 kilograms of suspected cannabis during a raid at Sagolband Pukhrambam Leirak on September 11. Based on information regarding the alleged concealment of cannabis, a joint team from Lamphel Police Station and Imphal Police Station, including women personnel, conducted the raid in the presence of an Executive Magistrate. Police recovered 18 packets of suspected ganja concealed in luggage. Those arrested have been identified as 37-year-old Gaigonliu Abonmei and 39-year-old Asma Gonmei from Tamenglong district, 31-year-old Sonik Ningthoujam from Imphal East, 50-year-old Naorem Dashobanta from Imphal West and 31-year-old AS Somichan from Senapati district.

Man Arrested in Firing Incident Targeting CRPF Personnel

Imphal, September 13: Police have arrested a 56-year-old man in connection with a firing incident involving a CRPF personnel at Khonghampat Awang Leikai. The arrested person has been identified as Sheleibam Yaima, son of Sh. Ibomcha, from Sekmai Parao. Police said an empty cartridge case was recovered from an Alto car bearing registration number MN-05A-9332, which was allegedly used in the attack. The accused has been remanded to eight days of police custody to facilitate further investigation into the incident. Police are continuing their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the firing and the alleged involvement of the arrested person.

Kuki Community Observes Black Day in Churachandpur

Churachandpur, September 13: The Kuki community observed Black Day, or SAHNIT, a day of mourning, at the KIC Complex in Tuibuong, Churachandpur, today. The observance was organised under the aegis of Kuki Inpi Churachandpur on the theme “Lest we forget - seeking for justice and the way forward.” Organisers said the day commemorates more than 950 Kuki lives lost during the Naga-Kuki clashes allegedly involving NSCN-IM. They also recalled the killing of 108 villagers from Joupi, Gelnel, Santing and Nungthut in 1993. The programme included a condolence service, one-minute silent prayer, traditional gun salute and floral tributes. Kuki community leaders also delivered speeches during the second session of the programme.

Progressive Writers Association Manipur Concludes Golden Jubilee

Imphal, September 13: The year-long Golden Jubilee celebration of the Progressive Writers Association, Manipur, concluded today at Irawat Bhawan. Speaking at the concluding programme, Association President Ibosana Khuman said members of the organisation have made significant contributions to the literary field through the publication of books of short stories and poetry. He said the Golden Jubilee celebration, which began in 2025 to mark the association’s 50th year, concluded with the distribution of awards for 2025 and 2026. The programme also featured the observance of the Irawat Memorial Anniversary and poetry recitation. Manipur Crowned Team Champion at North East Bodybuilding Championship

Kohima, September 13: Manipur has been crowned Team Champion at the 2nd Mr. North East India Bodybuilding and Physique Championship 2026 held in Kohima, Nagaland. The championship was conducted from September 11 to 13. Manipur secured three gold medals, with Worthan Lunglo winning in the 60-kg category, Mishap Khapai in the 65-kg category and Pritam Nahakpam in the 70-kg category. M. Pihimas won bronze in the 55-kg category, while Lungreishim Kasar secured bronze in the 60-kg category. Khoirom Bikramjit finished fifth in the 80-kg category, while Phila Yangya also finished fifth in the Women’s Model Physique category.

India, Sri Lanka Clash in Women’s T20 Asia Cup Final

Dubai, September 13: Defending champions Sri Lanka will face seven-time champions India in the final of the 6th Women’s Asia Cup T20 today. The title clash is scheduled to be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates at 8 PM IST. Both India and Sri Lanka have reached the final unbeaten in the tournament. India will look to add another continental title to its record, while Sri Lanka will aim to retain the championship.
